I am wanting to buy a laptop, just waiting till about mid March to do so (hoping something newer is available then) what I am needing to know is I want the laptop mainly for everyday simple use but to also to take on vacation with us to watch movies on,,but with this Blu Ray mess coming out, is everything going blu ray or are they still going to be "normal" movies to rent/buy out there? I really don't want to invest 500 + into a laptop for blu ray..that's alil more than I prefer to add to what I already want/need. Especially no more than I will be watching movies on it...Thanks Y'all

You can still rent VHS tapes so I don't know why they'd be dumping DVDs since most Americans don't own a HDTV.

You'll still be able to buy and watch normal DVD's for many years to come I expect. I certainly wound't invest in a HD format at the moment as the war between BluRay and HD-DVD is still going on.

and both are going to lose out to downloadable HD content as we all know...that our HD DVD will win b/c of microsoft backing it and as we all know microsoft has an unlimited budget

It will take at least a couple of years for BluRay to become as popular as DVDs today, by that time your notebook will be outdated anyways.

If you feel that you really need a bluray drive maybe after 6 months or 1 year later, then you can get an external bluray drive (or maybe get a standard desktop bluray drive and use with an enclosure).

Where are you getting your information? Sales and penetration strongly suggest Blu ray is winning.

yea pretty much blu ray is going to win, considering that hd basically has only 2 major movie companies backing them, paramout and universal, and blu ray has warner bros now, and Fox, Disney, Lionsgate, Sony, and MGM

and to answer the question, u dont need blu ray, standard dvds is still a strong market and wont die out for a looooong time, so i suggest to not get it, and save your money.. really dont think blu ray is all that worth since dvd is still such a strong market... and paying for a $30-40 blu ray movie, is kinda pointless to me, when i can go to my local movie trading company, and basically get any movie i want for like 5 to 10 dollars..

    so save the money lol
