Can't you remove bloatware from your Install/Uninstall Programs, instead of doing a clean reinstall of Vista?

You most likely will not be able to get your WEI score higher.
Simply uninstalling doesn't work as it should. There will always be traces left over from previously installed programs. The only way to get rid of them is to do a clean install.

But for the average ... User not someone who does anything super intensive..mostly...internet and occasional non powerful game...Is it really all that useful to do a clean install? Or can i just Remove all the programs I can and run well?
-
try removing the bloat and then see if it helps. if it doesn't then clean install.

CCleaner is another program which can be helpful in cleaning the junk from your machine. Use it wisely, though. -
I've taken a machine with an image at work that we just remove bloatware, and install software that we need on it, and compared it with a machine that I did a clean install on. Both machines were IBM T61, with like hardware and software installed. Performance wise, there wasnt much of a difference. The machine which had the bloatware removed actually booted about 1 second faster than the clean install machine, whereas the clean install machine shut down about 1 second faster than the other. One thing I did notice was that there were 20 less processes running at normal boot up on the clean install machine.

As far as I am concerned, for most people the problem with bloatware is that it can kill the OS. The problem isn't always the bloatware itself, but the holes that they leave behind.

A full reformat does provide some peace of mind, knowing that your new laptop is truly empty, and will only have on it what you decide to put there. Uninstalling several apps will undoubtedly leave several holes in the OS. Doing a reformat is starting anew with the system. Often, if you just uninstall bloatware, there will still be a ton of extraneous processes running, that would not be on a newly reformatted system.

What would be unwise...lol? I have it and now you have me worried... -
Be careful when you clean your Registry with this or any cleaner. Make sure you only delete items safe to delete. Allow backups if you're unsure about anything.
-
i've only had bad experiences with registry cleaners. It's really not worth it unless you install and uninstall loads of ****.

I've done one clean install to get rid of bloatware and will do another one when I upgrade to the Ultimate w/SP1 64bit. I will also add 1GB memory to max that out, add the new penryn cpu and the 7200rpm 250 HD sometime in April. That ought to pretty much max out this system.
