Hey, say if someone was kind enough to provide a partnumber for the blueray drive, how hard do you think it would be to order that from dell parts and say throw it in my lovely D630? and would it work?

Sorry to crush your dream, but no, it probably wouldn't work. You would have to have dedicated graphics for smooth video play.

The d630 has dedicated graphics option, so in theory it could work. With his ATG it is worth a try, could work, but the X3100 could also be to meager to run it.

I don't see why it wouldn't work with your onboard graphics; the embedded Intel solution is plenty powerful for the task of HD playback.

But does Dell have a Blu-Ray drive available for the media bay on the D6xx/D8xx series laptops? I've not been able to find one.

If you've tried building a Dell with a blue ray option you will be presented with this compatibility error dialog. That would mean that you would have to have a Core 2 Duo T7300 and Nvidia 8600m GT graphics.

Dell, like most companies, love to upsell ;)

The T7500 he has should be more than enough to play the BluRay files! The only difference he would have from my 8600M GT is higher CPU usage (as the 8600M GT is optimized for HD processing).

Since I don't own the BluRay I don't have the part number :(

So...if Toshiba can put a HD-DVD drive in their notebooks, with 'only' the X3100, theres no reason whatsoever that the same chip in the Dell machines couldn't handle Blu-Ray.

Its just a matter of upselling, IMHO. But the obstacle right now is actually getting a Blu-Ray (or HD-DVD) drive that will work with the D630.

they should fit as the bay options are universal among the dell line up.. maybe this weekend i can take my laptop to the dell kiosk and ask the dell guy there if i can take out their modular blueray drive and put it mine just to see if it works :)
then i would just need part numbers..

I am 99% sure it would work just fine because there are no BIOS limitations with optical drives attached to the mobo.

Your system's specs are more important to whether you'll have smooth playback or not....

And why wouldn't it work, grid?

It would work just fine. As I said, the BIOS has limitations on recognizing certain processors and video cards, but not optical disc drives.

For instance, I have put 3 different kinds of ODD's in my M170 (all from different manufacturers and Dell uses none of them) with zero problems aside from the bezel fitting correctly.

You might want to add some more theory into why it won't work so people will take you seriously.
