Same problem, more or less, with my XPS 1210: It suddenly went black, and wouldn't go past the Dell splash screen.

I called the Dell tech-phone, and a nice person from Ireland guided me through all sorts of software tests; no use. He then asked me to open the machine and pull out and re-insert the plug connecting the monitor to the mother board. This made the monitor work normally -- for 3 weeks, when the same thing happend. Same operation: I opened the machine and reinserted the monitor plug, and now it works.

This is strange, because a) the monitor plug didn't seem to be loose at all, and b) the screen goes to black at exactly the same place in the boot sequence, each time.

    Anyone?
