I got my Vostro 1400 a few days ago and yesterday tried to install XP on it since it came with Vista Home Basic, so i went and changed the HDD mode from AHCI to ATA so that the XP installation could find the HDD.
The XP installation was succesful but had a hard time installing all the drivers, so i decided to reinstall Vista BUT i forgot to change the HDD mode from ATA to AHCI and the nightmare began...
The Vista installation was perfect but then i remembered i didnt changed the mode and wanted to have it as it came to avoid any problem.
When i changed the HDD mode back to AHCI and tried to install Vista, it gave me an error and also i got the error with the ATA mode so it didnt matter which mode it was on, Vista wouldnt start and i couldnt reinstall!
I then tried fixing the error with the installation DVD but it didnt work, also the "Reset to factory" didnt work. There was no way this could work! Not even trying to install XP again would work!
But thank God i burned Ubuntu into a DVD and proceeded to install it, after i installed it i tried reinstalling Vista and it worked, now it is working as it should be.
So, my advice, remember the HDD mode you have if you change it. If you change it, have another OS burned (Ubuntu worked for me so i guess it didnt have to be a Windows version) if you do something wrong.

Or make a backup of the HDD before hand.
Big mistake and solution
