i was shopping for a dell laptop and i realized centrino Pro (santa rosa platform) is coming out within 3 weeks. Probably centrino pro will be too expesive initially but do u guys think this would cause a big sale of the current systems at dell?
i was thinking intel core 2 duo 2000 + intel N-wireless, however since centrino Pro will be a definite upgrade to this system maybe this would force dell to do sale.

Well yes, kinda. Dell always has offers on laptops, the specific offer and models vary weekly and from country to country, but there is always a deal to be had. Yes Santa Rosa is coming soon, and yes that will make current technology cheaper, but let's not get carried away on the impact.

There is always new technology coming out and it always makes previous generation slightly cheaper - C2D followed CD, 4 Meg cache C2D followed 2 Meg cache C2D, etc. The follow up to the Santa Rosa platform is only a year or so away.

The bottom line is, buy a laptop when you need it, and buy the performance you need, if you wait for the best deal then you will never buy it because the 2 Gig C2D that you want to wait a month for will be cheaper than that in 2 months, and cheaper still in 3 months.

Hopefully the current systems will go down a few hundred dollars.

hopefully they will update the looks of the laptops.. The white+gray casing is well over 2 years old, and it lacks so much stuff available on newer laptops (fingerprint reader, camera, mics, etc.. ) ...

I don't know if it will be this refresh that we see new Inspiron Chassis, it doesn't seem like the moto razer guy has had enough time to design something for Dell. But here is hoping.

I'm sure you'll see some sort of sale on the current line up. If you look at the Latitudes they are marked down nearly $300 already.

Why shouldn't they? You are buying the previous generation. This is how things work. You will get an even better deal on 2 generations back.
The same will happen when you decide to sell it. You will get $300 less.

Dell has constant "sales" in the form of coupons. When Santa Rosa comes out prices on some left over systems might be lowered a little, though I wouldn't expect it to be anything dramatic. In other words, if you're looking for a budget system, keep following the Sunday's newspapers for nice offers, otherwise don't expect to pay 40%-50% less when SR comes out.

i was not thinking about 40-60% drop in price (never seen such drop anyway). The system i want is in the 1200s right now from small business. I was thinking it may drop to 1000s when santa rosa comes out. Worth waiting two weeks.

You asked about a big sale, well you sort of got it!
I ordered my E1705 a couple of days ago with the sweet $450 off coupon, which I thought was an incredible deal, well guess what, it got better... Today I've noticed they issued a $500 off coupon (look in the dell coupons thread or page), I obviously called dell right away, cancelled my previous order, and placed a new one, saving an unbelievable $500, if you buy a $1500 system this is 33.3% off right there. I've been tracking dell coupons for some while now, and $500 off is the best I've seen. Anyway, if you were looking for a deal before santa rosa comes out and raises prices again, now its the time. That's my opinion anyway. Enjoy.

Good deal Balistic. I agree, if you keep following the bargins articles Andrew puts up each month and keep up with the coupons. You'll get a good deal regardless of Santa Rosa. I need to read the newspaper more often. Totally skipped looking in there...

that 500 off coupon is not much. If u buy from dell small business it comes to about the same price as dell home does plus the coupon. Besides dell home does not offer the intel core 2 du0 7200 anymore :(
