I called Dell yesterday and asked about an update to the 8600 and they said the dedicated graphics 6000 was the update. I told them that I really needed something that could run a game better than windows pinball and that the ati x300 wasn't going to cut it. They pointed me to the 9200 and xps2. Stupid right? A 17 inch notebook is HUGE. How is it even portable, I mean, 15.4 is a stretch, but 17 inches!?? I guess i'll have to hold out for now until a better graphics solution comes along. Damn dell.

x800 SLIGHTLY better than x300? you've gotta be kidding. people buying the x300 128mb card on this machine are being duped by dell. the x300 isn't even on the same planet as the x800. i'd be pushing it to say that the x300 would run doom3 at more than 6 fps.

    Hey,
I am glad they atleast came out with x300 instead of sticking just to gma900 - integrated card. I re-ordered mine with 128mb x300 card, and I am glad I got a good dea/ll.
Cant say if they are gonna come up with x800, which is slightly better than x300.

Wouldn't it be possible to order the 64MB X300 for the i6000d and buy the X800 3rd party and put it in yourself? Would that work[?]

    Ordered:
    Inspiron 6000d
    1 GB RAM
    60GB 7,200 RPM
    128MB ATI X300
    15.4" WSXGA+

lol...Yeah that was what I was thinking, too. x800 SLIGHTLY better? Its like

    X800-Maybach Benz
    X300-Honda

x800 definetaly CRUSHES x300 any day, any night. Nope, I don't think the x800 will work in the 6000d because (someone else posted this a while back), and from what I understood, the graphics card size is based on amount of ram, and I don't think they have a 128 mb x800, but they do have 128 mb x700, so, a possibly upgrade there??? Its confusing, but you never know.

I have the 9200 and it is relatively huge to carry around. It is reasonably light however. The graphics and the large display are easy on the eyes, so there is a tradeoff.

The X800 offers more than 3x the performance of the X300, and that is a LOW. Dell and other PC manufactures are trying to lead people into believing that the ammount of RAM equipped on a Video card is all that matters.

Also, the X300 offers only marginally slower performance than the 9600 in the 8600. By the way, the X300 is not a bad card, it is a very fast card for it's price, you should be able to get at least 20 FPS in Doom 3 at 1024x768.

Also, I don't reccomend getting a 64 MB card for anybody, except somone who wants to do basic word editing/internet and is planning to get Windows Longhorn when it is released (if you want only office apps and aren't going to get longhorn, then get integrated). 128 MB is starting to become a bare minimum for any gamer.

Also, the X800 is NEVER going to come out for the 6000, the 6000 dosen't use MXM or Axiom, it uses a dell proprietary module. They are probably not going to go any higher than X600 on this laptop, if that. It is not meant to be a performance laptop. Also, RAM is not all that keeps them from putting an X800 in the 6000, Heat is another factor. Even if they could manage an upgrade for the 6000, don't expexct them to...not offering fast graphics in a lower endd laptop draws people to their more expensive products.

    Inspiron 8600 * WUXGA * Intel Pentium M (Dothan) 725 (1.6 GHz) * 1024 MB of DDR333 * Mobility Radeon 9600 Pro Turbo with 128 MB @ 350/250 * 60 GB HD 5400RPM * CDRW/DVD Combo Drive

Yeah but what's surprising, is that the only options out there once the xps (original) is killed is a 17 inch notebook for better performance. i thought the year 2005 was the year of slimming down?

I wish that Dell would atleast come out with an Ati x600 option if they are going to limit most of their 'slightly portable' laptops with x300s. Apparently the x600s are pretty good.

Even better would be to have an Nvidia option for the laptops, since Nvidia's proprietary drivers are better (in terms of installation and actually working at the end of the day) than ATI's proprietary stuff on Linux right now!

Ok, well i found this on a test site, just some stats compared on various ATI cards. Note, these are the manfacturers numbers and don't necessarily reflect their actual performance.

    http://www.rojakpot.com/default.aspx?location=3&var1=162&var2=0

So it shows that the x300 is a very comparable card too the 9700M and is faster than a 9600M. Also, about the slightly better for the X800, compare those two sets of numbers, no comparison!

They are just numbers though, anyone know how well the x300 holds up graphic intense games? IE: Doom 3, Half-Life 2, WoW, UT2k4?

    *Dell Inspiron 9200, P-M 2.1ghz 400mhz FSB, 1 GB Ram 333mhz, 60gb 7200rpm HD, 128 ATI M Radeon 9700, XP Pro SP2, Wifi + Bluetooth*

AHHHHH whatever. i guess i won't be jumping on this current coupon promotion. No matter how you cut it, the x300 is not for gaming, and, therefore, the 6000 is not for gaming. The 6000 cannot possibly be a replacement for the 8600, as the 8600 is far superior, especially in graphics. Looks like I'm once again in the waiting game. If any dell reps are reading this: do market research before cutting your number one selling notebook.

How can you say the x300 is not for gaming? It can run games pretty damn decently, especially on a budget like this. It is just barley worse than the 9700. In benchmarks I've seen the x300 gets only a few FPS less than the 9700, like 25 for the 9700 v. 20 for the x300.

At the price of Dell, with the $750 off coupon, you really can't complain about the performance for the money. Its a wonderful value.

The x300 will run most games just fine. Okay, if you are playing nothing but FarCry all day in maximum resolution, yeah you're going to have problems (but if thats the case then you shouldnt be shopping for a notebook to begin with). But if you just want to play some HL2 once in a while along with a few other modern games the x300 should be enough.

I'd buy this deal right now if I were you because from what I have seen of observing Dell coupons for the last few months as well as speaking with some people who've ordered from Dell often, a $750 off coupon or an equivalent deal doesnt come around very often so you never know when you'll have another golden opportunity like this.

Well ok not slightly but better! heh

I am happy with x300 for me and best of luck for guys waiting for better card -PCI express card in 6000. My wait ends here..[^]

I heard from guys who got the machine with x300, that they still feel that 6000d has a dim display ... does that mean my 100 bucks extra for the card is a waste ( I just wanted better display for DVDs!) [B)]

Did they get the ultrabright one or the standard 1280x800?

I think the ultrabright should be better, much better.
