I've been searching the DELL outlet, but I hardly ever see an RGB LED laptop go up for sale.

If they do, it's typically part of a very expensive configuration. Any chance DELL would swap out for a better screen if requested?

What model are you looking for? I browse the small business section of the outlet frequently. There are usually a number of Precision models with RGBLED available at any time. Is the RGBLED the only thing you're looking for?

Was really wanting a M4500, but M6500 would work. Prices get to the 2K range when I see them with RGB. Yes, RGB is really what I'm looking for. Also considered alienware and studio.

I'd also like i core rather than duo.

Well, with an icore and rgbled, you are probably going to also have other higher-priced specs on the machine, hence the higher price. I got my machine, described in my signature, from the outlet in Jan 09 for about 1,300.

Today is the day to keep your eye on the Outlet. Thursday is when they list new inventory and it happens all day long, not in one batch.

EDIT: Now that I remember, I originally purchased my machine with the T9600. Something was wrong and it was replaced with the one with the 9800.

Anyone know if I'll see an appreciable difference between the WLED and RGB LED screen? Does WLED screen variations 720p, 900p, 1080p have different color/contrast/black qualities?

The RGB LED has a significantly higher color gamut than the WLED. It's much better if it's properly calibrated, but some people don't like the overly saturated colors. The RGB LED also has much higher power draw than the WLED, which has resulted in it being pulled form the XPS16, because it was causing throttling problems. With a lower powered and/or larger laptop you shouldn't have that problem.

We've been comparing display measurements for the 900p and 1080p WLEDs over in the XPS board, and the contrast, gamut, and brightness are very similar across the various manufacturers for the 900 and 1080p WLEDs.

The RGB LED is quite a bit brighter than the WLED, but it has worse black level. Contrast ends up equaling out very similar, at around the 550:1 range.

Don't think the M4500 was ever available with RGB LED. Your best bet is to find a refurb SXPS16 /w RGB or M6500/M17X R2.

    You are damn right.

My Sony AW 18.4 RGB LED is unable to reach beyond 500:1
In contrast to CCFL version (800:1), RGB Display requires heavy usage of color calibration.

You're telling me the WLED has better black level and the RGB? I wouldn't have expected that to be the case, that's really good to know.

Is the Studio 1080p WLED the same as the one in the x15m/M4500/M6500? I was wondering how the viewing angles stacked up. I would like better blacks and better viewing angles. The m15x looks to do a pretty good job in that department.

Also, is the RGB LED the only cause of the throttle issue? Wondering if higher power CPU i7 cause issues.

As far as the throttling goes, it's a combination of factors. The laptops just drew too much power for their size. The RGBLED consumes much more than the WLED does, so they got rid of it. The older 3670 and 4670 GPUs consumed too much, so they no only offer the 5730 when combined with the quad-core i7. For the most part the throttling problem is now gone, though there are still a few that have it.

As far as the black level goes, remember that in the RGBLED there are 3 LEDs lit at all times, and on a WLED there is only 1.
