I wanted to know out of curiousity, because I still don't know, and I have spent some time trying to figure it out, but what brand of DVD recordables are the most reliable and has the best data retention and scratch resistance?

Also, what format is better... DVD+R or DVD-R?

Next, what format is still better, DVD-RW or DVD+RW?

What about DVD+R DL or DVD-R DL?

I want to make back up discs but I need to have the cold hard facts first, and I don't know what brand is the best and what formats are the best...

Verbatim. Technically + is more reliable than -, but it's not humanly noticeable.

What does Verbatim say to back up the facts that they are the best? And what was first, +R or -R? And why is one better than the other?

I have found that as long as you buy brand name discs it doesn't matter the brand. Verbatim, Memorex, etc. are all good. As to + or -, well it depends on if you are going to be burning for a dvd player or something. Certain brands like Sony can be picky as to the + or -. Look at your manual for your player and see what it says. I found that my Sony prefers the -R/R-W. The war between standards has colled down. It's not like the HD- BluRay war or the Beta-VHS war. Nearly every single burner supports both standards. If you are just making backups, find a brand you like/trust and go with it. They are the same densities and size.

As long as it isn't some cheapo off brand you should be fine. Go to WalMart and pick up whatever is the best price for or looks prettiest. Seriously, it reall doesn't matter between the major barnds. Before they wear out you will have new backups or got a new PC. They last like 20-30 years. If you are budget minded and want to make regular backups, get DVD-R/W. Label them and rotate them. I am using Memorex DVD-Rs right now because WalMart ahd them on sale for $10 per 100. When I run out I will find the next bargain lol.
