I just got WD My Book 500GB external HDD so I can backup all my media and important docs, but what other files should I back up before formatting my hard drive?
I want to have all the same programs and software, internet favs and have same settings after formatting-what files do I backup and where are they? Anything else I should back up?

Well you cant back up your programs or settings...but you can your internet favorites. Where they are, depends on what browser you use.

I use Mozilla , where would they be?

Click on bookmarks -> organize bookmarks -> file -> export

itssr20 go to
bookmarks>organize bookmarks>file>export save it as whatever..
new os>mozilla>organize bookmark>file>import that file. -
I recommend that you backup your entire profile. It contains personal setting, prefences, bookmarks etc.
More info about backup up the profile can be found here
Also programs like Belarc Advisor can tell you versions of all software installed on your laptop so it will be easier to get "back on your feet" after the reformat
Before I format and lose everything....
