Hey I have a simple question. Does it affect the battery greatly if I leave it in the laptop while I am plugged?

    Thanks.

There is a good wiki here : http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Lithium_ion_battery#Storage_temperature_and_charge and from the wiki they quote : "When using a notebook computer running from fixed line power over extended periods, the battery should be removed and stored in a cool place so that it is not affected by the heat produced by the computer.". I've seen some people in the forums stating that it does not change much if you leave it in or not. Personally, I use my notebook mostly on AC and I leave the battery inside, it's been 1 year and my battery still runs great and last as if it was new. Hope this helps.

I never had any issues. I think that was more for the older notebook batteries.

The battery will degrade over time even if left in storage.... Count on having to buy new ones eventually.

FWIW, I always left the Li-Ion battery in my old Inspiron 4000. I would use the computer for months and months at a time as a desktop replacement, leaving it on most of the time, never unplugging it and never taking it anywhere.

Well, after about three years of this, the battery wouldn't charge up anymore. I'm not sure whether that's because of how I was using it, or maybe there's some other issue.

three year is a very good life time for a battery, i had to replace my 9cell on D620 after 9 months. well i am using it pretty much everyday, in the office, road, plane, you name it.

Bottom line is leaving the battery plugged in for an extended time while you're charging is creating heat which is not good for your battery.

Even if I hardly ever actually used the battery? Just a guess, but I probably ran the computer on battery power for less than 100 hours before the battery went kaput.

Battery will degrade over time; it will last longer if you use it less and in your case 3 years. I use it everyday and I had to get a replacement after 9 months.
