I've gotten my inspiron 1520, about a year ago sometime around in october, and i haven't been using it extensively enough on battery... but the thing is, my battery life has much shorter, and the laptop is used daily, but either is it being plugged in or once in a while on battery... I've been getting the dell battery notice saying that the battery doesn't hold enough charge as it used too... now i want to know, why is it soo soon? the battery hasn't been discharged or used too much, and it's only been a year since i got the laptop...

There are a few variables that decrease a battery's life, so it would be hard to pinpoint an exact cause? However, have you tried to calibrate the battery by draining it and then recharging it?

I have not done that yet, right now, i'm in the process of doing that... so hopefully, it will work longer and better from now on

Yeah, I would start off by trying to calibrate it and hopefully that will clear out of the issues for you. That is too soon for it to die especially with low use, but it can happen.

Also leaving your laptop plugged in with the battery in can greatly deminish the amount of charge it holds
remove the battery when its plugged in and when running on the battery let it run all the way down untill you plug it in again, once charged remove the battery again

I believe you are supposed to put it in a bag before you put it in the refrigerator to make sure no moisture can damage the battery.
