    I'm getting a Vostro 1500 and I can't decide if I should get the 6-cell or the 9-cell.

The 9-cell has better battery life, but costs $40 more and sticks out

For the most part, I should be around outlets, but I'd still want a strong battery. I can run the laptop without the battery right?

What is a laptop like without a battery is there a giant hole in the back?

    Thanks.

the laptop will run without the battery just fine. however, if the power goes out or your AC plug is removed, you will lose what you were doing on the computer since there will be no power backup. and yes, there will be a big "hole" in the back where the battery would normally be.

It your around power outlets, then a large battery doesn't neccesarily need to be used, but if you feel its better having it, go with the 9 cell one. Like brianj320 said, you can use the notebook without the battery, but there will be a hole where the battery would normally be.

Well, I've heard that keeping the battery in the laptop while plugged in will slowly make it less powerful overtime, well, moreso than usual.

I want the 6-cell for cosmetic reasons :p
