An office mate advised me that if I want to lengthen the battery life of my Dell Inspiron 1525, I should REMOVE the battery whenever I used AC power. Is this a good idea? Thanks

This is a good idea as the battery life will shorten if the battery is exposed to heat ie from the laptop. The best thing to do is to charge the battery to around 40% and then leave it in a cool dry place. But remember to let the battery run down until the latop has to hibernate once in a while (ie every 6 months) so that the laptop can recalibrate the battery and give you a correct reading for amount of battery time left.

You do not want to run a Lithium Ion battery down to the point that it dies. That shortens its life.

Running the laptop with or without the battery will not affect the battery life - they will not overcharge.

I agree that it shouldn't be run down until it dies thats why I said to run it down until the laptop goes into hibernation mode. I assumed that the laptop was set to do this as it should be and as they are on default. I should have made it more clear however as running the battery until there is 0% charge on it can greatly reduce the battery lifespan and can even render the battery unusable in some cases.
However, running the laptop with the battery in can reduce the battery life although this depends on how much heat the laptop produces as heat reduces the life of these batteries.
