    Greetings!

My Studio 1735 won't charge the battery, and is flashing 4 amber 1 white at the jack. Does anyone know what that means? BIOS says "battery is not installed". It will boot when bypassed.

Do I just need a new battery, or do I need a motherboard?

    Thanks,

    PG

If you aren't getting like an "AC adapter not recognized" or any funny business like that, you're probably just down a battery. I've had a lot of dead Dell batteries show up as "battery not installed" in known working laptops.

Thanks for the input Commander Wolf... It still has me worried though. I'm in the midst of a repair on an HP Pavillion 9700/9800 that won't charge the battery either... and it needs a motherboard (posted for advice in the HP section). The owner, a friend, tried a new battery with no luck. Now I have to replace the motherboard for her, and it's a real PITA. Luckily I can do it for about $250 - $300 less than what our local BestBuy Dufus Squad wanted.

I think I might try the cheapest battery replacement I can find, about $97 for the 9-cell extended, and if I have to send it back the restocking fee won't hurt so much.

Just wanted to add that in Windows 7 the battery meter says "Plugged in but not charging".

What does Dell BIOS say? Sounds like a bad battery.
