I'm buying a I8600 with a spare battery. Does anyone know if there is a way I can charge the extra battery outside the notebook while not in use? Being able to charge it outside especially through my auto's 12 VDC system would be great.

I asked this same question when I ordered my 8600, and I was told no - that the battery can only be charged while in the notebook. For this reason I didn't opt for a second battery since I don't do that much travelling and at some point I would likely end up with 2 dead batteries.

I did order the 90w power adapter, however. I was told by Dell that this upgrade from the 60w allows you to charge the battery while the computer is in use. The standard 60w won't charge the battery unless the computer is off.

Anyone else hear of this? Seems like it should be pointed out more clearly if this is true - I would be really dissapointed if I couldn't charge my battery while plugged in and using my notebook.
