    Is it ok to run my notebook (XPS M140) without the battery (plugged into wall of course)? Does the battery provide some kind of regulating feature so that it needs to be plugged into the notebook?

    Yes, you can safely plugged in your lappy without attaching the battery. :)

    @XPSM140Guy: On the other hand many people (including me) believe that plugging w/ battery attached will harm your battery in no time.

    your fears are unfounded. at this stage of the game, the only real enemy of batteries are heat. keep your laptop (and therefore your battery) cool and you have nothing to worry about. all the little "tricks" of removing the battery while on a/c or discharging regularly, etc. do not help to prolong battery life.
