how much would/should having the dedicated 8400m gs video card affect battery life for the xps m1330 as opposed to the integrated card?

    At least 15-20%.

If you won't be playing games, just get the integrated.

CNET got ~145 minutes out of their XPS 1330 and it had the 8400M and the 6-cell battery. I think you can figure to get at least 3 hours without the 8400M.

Yes and those 2h and 25 minutes were obtained while DVD viewing. That's a stress test. Normal use, like word, internet, etc. would get you around three hours already with the 8400 doing simple tasks. With integrated graphics that could even be more. Don't know what screen brightness and other settings the used though...

I think I will go for the integrated graphics. 8400 is a weak (as in entry level)gaming card anyway. In a years time, you won't be able to play new demanding games to your satisfaction on that anyway, so I think I'll just go for the battery life. The new integrated graphics should allow me to play the ocasional older game like Rome Total Realism with descent graphics and frame rates.

I only wished they would hurry up with the availability of a 64GB SSD. Can you inmagine battery life watching DVD's from your SSD?
