    Just to double check,

    Volume Icon:
Control Panel -> Sound And Audio Devices -> Place Volume Icon In The Taskbar

    Power Icon
Control Panel -> Power Options -> Advanced -> Always Show Icon On The Taskbar

    Both are checked?

You are most likely running Windows XP and you use the welcome screen function when you log in. The only way I know to fix this is to use the NT style screen. No simple work-arounds, sorry.

To switch to the NT style login screen, go to Control Panel, then the User Accounts settings. Click on 'choose ther way users log on/off' and uncheck the top box on the next screen, the one labeled 'use the welcome screen'

And voila, that should fix your problems. You will notice that hitting ctrl-alt-del will bring up a different screen you may be used to seeing, the NT style screen. Personally, I find the "Lock Workstation" button indispensible; locking the computer takes only half a second.

Yes, you'll do away with the Welcome Screen but I never really liked it anyways, it's just clunky user interface on top of the NT login screen.

    Cheers

for the volume control, you need to start one of the creative applications. If you disable any of the creative applications in MSCONFIG, then your volume control would be missing.
