On the Belgian website of Dell I can configure the Inspiron 13z with a 8-cell battery. But this battery sticks out form the bottom of the laptop. On the accessories tab of the configuration tool I can also select a 6-cell battery (451-10702) that doesn't stick out. But my Dell contact said this battery is not supported on this model. So their website must be faulty.

Can anyone confirm the 6-cell doesn't fit the Inspiron 13z. Is the 4-cell battery any good?

Looking at the 13z manual... there isn't an option for a 6-Cell battery, just the 4-Cell and 8-Cell jobs. Sadly, the manual also doesn't specify the rated capacities of these batteries, so it's kind of hard to estimate performance, especially without any reviews out there...

With 8 cell battery I can get 5 hours under stress of CPU + GPU tasks, 6 hours watching videos and 7+ hours browsing the web.

That is with a g105m dedicated GPU. So halving that for 4 cell would be 2.5-~4hours max with 4 cell battery, but again that's with dedicated GPU. You should expect a little more life with intel integrated graphics, so maybe 3-5 hours with 4 cell.

My experience of the 8 cell - it's ugly when you first see it and ruins the sleek look - but it gives a useful typing slope and gives it good airflow underneath the laptop. It's a simple choice of function or fashion - the weight increase is negligible and it doesn't stop it fitting in my laptop sleeve, but it would look much cooler without it.

Thanks jk6959, you helped me a lot.

I ordered my new Inspiron 13z with the 8 cell battery. Maybe I will also order the 4 cell battery for portability if needed later.

Managed to find it in the accessories section of inspiron 13z. Primary 4-cell 32W/HR LI-ION (Kit)

But in the "Compatible with" it says: Inspiron Mini 9 CTO. ?

Can anyone confirm that that battery would find in Inspiron 13z originally bought with 8-cell battery?

Wow didn't realise it was only 32whr! That's a bit disappointing with the 8-cell having ~>80whr I hoped 4cell users would be getting a clean 50% rather than 40% battery life. With my use that would equate to su7300/g105m having only 2-3 hours life under real usage and little more idling. If the claims they make are anywhere near realistic that would give the su7300/x4500hd only 4.6hours essentially idling as max life, so prob 3-4 hours more realistic range for them unless doing intensive activities where it'd go back to 2-3 hours, maybe less.

    Hi jk6959,

Do you have any experience using the 4-cell battery with an Inspiron 13z with the dedicated graphics card G105M? When customizing the laptop on their web page if you select G105M they won't let you select the 4-cell battery as the primary battery. The 4-cell battery can only be selected with a integrated graphics card. But even when you select G105M you can still buy the 4-cell battery from accessories as secondary battery! Here is the link:

    http://accessories.euro.dell.com/sn...&s=dhs&cs=iedhs1&sku=451-10691&mfgpid=1936810

But the spec of the scondary battery says that it is compatible with "Inspiron Mini 9 CTO". What a mess!

I rang Dell twice and got two different responses.

I am still not sure if I the Primary 4-cell 32W/HR LI-ION (Kit) battery can be used with the high spec Inspiron 13z laptop.

I only estimated times from my experience with 8-cell battery. Mine is 8-cell ~80whr (+0-2 whr I think) and I just took 40% of my experienced battery lifes (32/80 = 40%) so 5 hours of usage A on 8 cell became 2 hours of same usage on 4-cell, nothing complicated.

Since the lowest-end 13z comes with 4-cell battery standard it would make sense that you could configure the G105m if you called a rep with same 4-cell, but from my experience with 8-cell - scaling battery life down to 40% would make it a pointless exercise in having a CULV. You'd get the same or worse battery life as mainstream C2D / AMD Turion battery life in a lot of cases just for a thin look (so just paying for thin system).

If you can give examples of where you'd use the laptop it would help with how much the 8-cell would hinder your use:
i.e. if you used it a lot for travelling, then sticking-out battery limiting the vertical viewing angle that little bit more might get on your nerves.
If you used it primarily on a desk or on your lap then you might not mind it or actually like it
If you used it primarily in starbucks next to hordes of macbook users you might feel silly with the fat buttom spilling out of your 13z :)
    etc...

If you'd like me to try out anything useful with the 8-cell battery I can look into it for you to give you an idea of real usage.
