I can't get the audio input jack to work using either an MP3 or a microphone. This is a new Inspirion and when I call Dell, they send me overseas to someone that keeps telling me it's a problem with the three MP3's I have tried and the microphone so they send me to "Pro Support" that wants a credit card number. Anybody have an idea if this is a software issue or a defective input jack? Thanks.

I'd recommend going into control panel, and finding the sounds/audio devices/microphones dialogue. ensure that the mic/line in is enabled, and see if that works.

No go, I have gone through those settings over and over. Starting to think it's a hardware issue.

So what happens when you plug the microphone in just to try to do a test in those screens? Any mesaage appear at all?

Have you tried re-installing the IDT audio drivers?

Could be software related? I experienced a little mishap simliar to this but it was with a USB headset.

I had my USB headset plugged in, everything working normally. Then I shut the lid which puts my laptop on sleep mode. I went to class, came back. Opened the lid and windows login screen appears. I log in, and the sound now plays through my speakers. Even though my USB headset was still plugged in and was never unplugged. I thought, hmm, must've shut off the usb connection. So I unplugged the headset (the unplug sound plays) and then I replug the headset (the plugged sound plays) and still it doesn't play through the headset. I looked under control panel settings it seems to recognize my usb headset and seems to be working fine. I set it as default volumes turned up, still plays only through my speakers.

So I restarted with the headset left plugged in. Nothing. I unplugged it and restarted, then plugged it back. Nothing. I unplugged it, powered the machine down for atleast 5 minutes, plugged it back in and still nothing. Then I went back to control panel and set it back to default once again and for some odd reason, this time it worked. I don't know how to explain it ;)
