Do you really have to use Pidgin?
I think you can disable the error sounds in the settings. -
It's not from in pidgin's settings. It's the Computer's
And I would very muhc like to use Pidgin. Perhaps I'll go back to a previous version -
Well, I was referring to Pidgin's settings.
-
Internal beeping can't be from pidgin though. Seems odd.
-
No, I mean disable it's error sounds (from Pidgin settings).
-
No it's not from Pidgin's alert sounds. Sounds have been off by default anyways. I fixed the problem by reverting to a previous version.
But strange how that happened, it's quite unusual for a program to active the internal sound. -
Hmm...it's possible and I don't see the reason why.

Here's how to get rid of that stupid beep:
Open the file C:\Program Files\Common Files\GTK\2.0\etc\gtk-2.0\gtkrc in wordpad and add this line to the end:
gtk-error-bell = 0
If pidgin is running, close it and start it back up. The reason for this option not being in pidgin is because it is a default GTK "feature" which the pidgin devs didn't disable. There, the beep is now gone. Hooray! -
You're awesome. Thanks hamsterpye!

You can also mute "PC Beep" in Windows. That will take care of it.
(In Vista, it's under the Speakers/HP section)
(In XP, it's under the advanced properties of the Playback mixer) -
i too joined just for this post... for some reason it says that access is denied when attempting to add that line to the file. any thoughts? it is not checked as read only or anything else...

I had the same problem. I uninstalled the audio codec...when it reinstalled, it did the trick...
-
Thank you!! -
Whoa blast from the past
Nice to see that a fix was found.
Backspacing in Pidgin...when there isn't anything to backspace = internal beeping sound.
