I am planning to buy a m1730 with Core 2 Duo 2.4GHz, 8800GTX SLI, 4GB ram, 200GB 7200rpm HD that sums up to a price of $3000 CAD not including tax. Should I wait until end of august for the Dell's back to school discount? Is it likely that a new model with better graphics card and cpu that is about the same price to come out before september? Thanks in advance.

Discounts are about the same during all times of the year. Other than Black Friday - where you can get an uber-crappy computer at an uber-cheap price, Back to School is like any other time.

Well, from two of my experiences with Dell, the XPS M1530 for example, major discounts were from last week of april to early june (25% off).

Back from I wanted to purchase my E1505 (back when inspiron wasnt considered a budget notebook), the major major discounts were early May to end of June.

The back to school discounts typically arn't as great. As you can see for yourself right now, XPS M1530 has a Buy one get one 50% off. Unless you have two children going to college.... not really much of a deal considering they all at high cost.

Your best bet is to check daily, as sometimes they put out a great deal for no reason.

I was about to buy in late April, when they had a coupon out that took some percent off, when on the day I was going to get my EPP quote from my sales rep, I checked my cart, and I had a 40% off discount. It was a three day sale, no coupon code, just a good promotion.

    Good luck.

XPS could be out by late August/September or October at latest.

There may be a good sale before the new release...if the notebook has a new design.

dell's back to school discount is the same as it's father's day, mother's day, valentine's, spring, summer, autumn, winter extravaganzas, labour day, halloween, thanksgiving and secretary's day ones.

it isn't a discount, they're all really dumb promos and the prices all stay the same.

just buy now, but what an awful price, if you know anyone in the US, by through them

Will they maybe have a huge discount on older models when the new Montevina xps comes out?

No, the older models get replaced by the new. So there will be no huge discount on older models. You might still find them on the Dell Outlet (refurbs).

    Well put!

Buy it when you need it is my advice. Prices will definitely drop eventually, you'll never catch up. Just catch whatever is the current best promo, and never look back :)

Highly doubt it. XPS price drop already take place. You can blatantly tell that Dell obviously originally anticipated for Montevina to be released in mid June as originally scheduled. Now that its over, well, they gotta roll out something, so they rolled out Studio. Now that that Studio is out, they no longer have any discounts for the M1530 just because it would be detrimental to Studio sales if they kept it up. Prices for the XPS M1530 and other laptops will remain high with minimal discounts.

The best thing to do now is wait, since the prices are high already, when the Montevina refresh comes out sooner or later, the prices can't be much higher. Thats why you should get the Montevina refresh as its gonna be much more bang for your buck. If Dell releases a 25% off coupon in the near future, which is unlikely, then go for the M1530. Otherwise it would be silly to buy it now.

Nope, nothing in Canada day today... so BS. Gonna wait 2-3 weeks for Montevina, and if it doesn't come out then well I'll just get an Asus. Screw Dell and their bad Canadian deals.

Smart Choice, though I can assure you Montevina won't be coming out in 2-3 weeks. Its not coming out for at least another month. 4-5 weeks would be slightly more realistic. Though I'm thinking more mid-end of August.

I can't wait that long, unfortunately... unless I can be guaranteed a laptop shipment after a week... I need it for at least 1 week to make sure everything is all right, reformat, get my stuff in order before I go to uni. Why did Intel have to delay Montevina.. bah. Should've released everything except the wireless chip =/

Well, if you seriously need it within such a time span, then you might as well get a Studio series if price is an issue. At the very least you will be getting the most bang for your buck compared to getting an XPS at this point, because it is basically certain that the new Montevinas that come out can't be much more expensive than the current XPS out there now.

i did a comparson of system prices earlier today and found that the xps is 100 dollars more for setup that is much better than the studio. basically t8300 vs t5850, radeon hd 3450 vs 8600m gt, 3gb ram vs 4gb ram, 250 hd vs 320 hd for the differences

Yeah, the same thing will happen for Montevina's XPS refreshes as well, so its really up to you. Be cheap get the Studio now, get XPS M1530 for 100 dollars more, or wait for Montevina to come and buy that at around the same price as the XPS M1530. It will only get better, though at this point, though it is weeks away, I'd say the successor to the M1530 is worth waiting for, though if I were you, I would admittedly get the XPS M1530 if you really really need it in your hands asap.
