Since my M1330 is my first Dell Notebook and I've only seen a few minor enhancements by way of the M1330 BIOS revisions, I was wondering what I can expect in terms of HW upgrades.

To place my question into perspective, I just downloaded a new BIOS for my Asus P5B Deluxe (Intel S-775 & P965/ICH8 chipset) which allowed me to upgrade my 1066MHz-based E6400 C2D (2.13GHz) to a 1333MHz E6850 (3GHz) CPU!

    Now that's what I call a BIOS upgrade :D

Coming back to the M1330, I have a T7500 and even if I could upgrade to the next 65nm Merom (T7800?), it wouldn't make much sense but it certainly would make a lot of noise (i.e., the blower would go into OT, lol). What would make a lot of sense, however, would be to upgrade to a 45nm Penryn, as it would not only add a few MHz to the count, but would do so most likely using less power!

Speaking of the 45nm CPUs, my P5B's latest BIOS is also [Wolfdale] "45nm-CPU-compatible", although I'm not sure of the real benefits on the Desktop side, but I certainly would like to think that it is an option for the M1330! After all, the CPU is officially speaking, a customer-replacable HW component and so why shouldn't Dell offer us the chance, assuming the M1330's Mobo is up to the task...!

I'm also making a few bold assumptions here, such as Socket-P has been kept for the Penryns, that Penryn is downwards-compatible and can be run at a lower FSB (and/or use a higher internal multiplier) and of course, be compatible with the P965 chipset...

Assuming the above assumptions were to hold true, what are the odds that Dell will release an appropriate BIOS?

With ALL laptops, you are extremely limited to any hardware upgrades. Dell will most likely not provide any support for newer processors as they have never done so in the past.

Sorry, just the way it is. As soon as you bought your 1330 you commited yourself to it's current hardware (socket P meroms).

A change in FSB speed is not (necessarily) a HW-limiting factor and Motherboard manufactures are often in the position to plan ahead of the game and provide the necessary HW components (e.g. voltage regulation, etc.) that has upwards compatibility but only offer the necessary instructions (via the BIOS) at a lter date...

Agreed, but there's still a chance for some "lightweight" upgrades, technically speaking. I'm not familiar with ASUS' line of Notebooks, but if they apply their desktop philosophy to any extent to their Notebooks, then I bet they probably will be the ones to make that extra effort.

Oh well, just wishful thinking on my part... :p

if Asus made some attractive looking laptops I would of bought one over my 1330 but all their laptops are ugly but at the same time their quality is very good
