I just got my Microsoft LX3000 headset from Live Search Club in the mail (prize) and it's excellent. Strong bass, full-bodied sound, 1 USB plug vs. 2 headphone jacks, light and comfortable, and best of all--it avoids the whining noises from the built-in audio jacks and allows me to avoid the built-in microphones ('Digital Mic' in Sound Options, actually a LiteOn M08 array) which gave me tons of conflicts when I plugged in my own audio headset.
It was free for me because I played some stupid flash games on the Windows Live! website, but I'm sure they can be had for $30. Worth it if you ask me.
Good luck.

It is a solution, but why should we fork out more money to fix something that should not be broken?

I don't think he was saying people should live with it, just that there's a work around for the time being.

^^ Time being? Actually there will never be a fix for this issue on the 1520 unless they change some hardware inside...it's a fundamental flaw with the design of the system (placement of hardware in areas they shouldn't be because of inevitable interference). Software won't fix it...and being forced to have a "work around" with things such as a USB or bluetooth headset is ridiculous.

I am planning to connect my new Inspiron 1520 to my stereo system via USB. I am glad to hear that the interference people have been talking about is limited only to the headphone jack.
Avoid the 1520's sound issues with a USB headset.
