    Hi,

I have a Dell Studio 1537, and I reguarly use my TV with my laptop as an extra monitor, and when I plug the HDMI cable in, the audio switches over to the TV with no problems. However, it seems that whenever I restart my laptop, (even if it was turned off after having taken the HDMI cable out) the audio is being sent through HDMI, and I have to go and change it to the speakers of the laptop. Is there any way of basically setting the laptop to send audio through HDMI if it is plugged in, and the speakers if not?

    Thanks

I had the same issue a while ago...I could usually fix it by just plugging something (headphones, speakers, mic, doesn't matter) into the first 3.5mm audio port on the left, the one closest to the front, and taking it out a few seconds later. I guess that tells the driver to play sound via the actual laptop speakers again. No idea why that worked though. :p

For the record, I ended up uninstalling the IDT audio drivers a long time ago and using the default Vista HD audio drivers. It makes everything significantly louder and does the job nicely. HDMI still works fine, but audio still comes out via the laptop speakers that way.

If you don't lack of HDMI audio, then you might want to consider getting rid of the IDT drivers.

Cheers for the suggestion - I actually considered doing that. As I happens though, I really like the HDMI audio,a s I have it hooked up to my HD TV, which has better speakers than the studio. It seems to be an intermittent problem though - sometimes it switches perfectly, as demonstrated by opening the sound properties tb and then unplugging the HDMI lead and watching the default output device change. Maybe I should have paid extra for the HD Creative option when I bought the laptop...

Yeah, the integrated speakers aren't that great.

Then again, I'm using a Logitech Z-2300 200-watt 2.1 speaker setup, which is way better than my 22" HDTV's integrated speakers. :p
