Audio issue only for recording/streaming or for playback too?

I have ordered a Dell Studio 1537 notebook and I got a bit worried after reading all the issues with audio. Bad speakers aside, is everything else related to streaming/recording of the audio, rather than the playback?

Out of the box even the Windows start up sound crackles. However, with a bit of work and the latest drivers (sometimes using even non Dell drivers) I was able to get mine to play audio with very few skips. It wasn't 100% perfect, and you'd still get the rare crackle/skips, but if you don't mind it being perfect, it was very useable.
