    Hello

I am racked with indecision on an order I placed last night. Spec below

    Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T5470 Processor (1.6GHz,800MHz,2MB L2 cache) edit

    Genuine Windows Vista® Home Premium

Base Warranty - 1 Year Business Hardware Support

    15.4" Wide Screen WXGA (1280 x 800) Display with TrueLife™

    Matte Jet Black with Camera

    2048MB 667MHz Dual Channel DDR2 SDRAM (2x1024)

    160GB (5400RPM) SATA Hard Drive

    128MB nVidia® GeForce® 8400M GS

    Fixed Internal 8X DVD+/-RW Drive

    Primary 6-cell Lithium-Ion Battery (56 WHr)

    Norton™ Internet Security™ 2007 - 15 Month Protection

Dell™ Wireless 355 Bluetooth 2.0 Module (up to 3Mbps) with Enhanced Data Rate, for Vista

    Intel® Pro Wireless 3945 802.11a/b/g Mini-Card

    56.6k V.92 Capable Internal Modem & Adapter

I am concerned I am going to regret not getting a 1.8 Core 2 Duo and the 256MB 8600M GT card. It will cost a bit more but It is not like I can upgrade at a later date. The above spec has set me back £550 and I am concerned that I could have got a better deal.

I am a casual gamer at best but if I get into gaming I could regret not getting the better card. My other option is to just increase the GPU and leave the Processor at 1.6.

I ordered it last night. What is the deal with cancelling my order. Is it straightforward If I say I am going to re-configure. Can I still haggle.

Also, my CSR guy was really helpful so should I get back in touch with him to re-order if i decide to or will i get a better deal starting from scratch, as he claimed he had done all he could do with regard to a deal??

    Would he lose his comission?

Any advice would really be appreciated.

    Thanks

I just cancelled mine because the new deals today are a lot beter. For £588 (or £557 with quidco or £570 with EPP) you can get one with a T7300 2ghz, 2gb ram, 160gb hdd and a 8600m gt. Too cancel just give the customer care line a call but be aware that it wont be processed until tommorow.

Thanks for that. Forgive me but what is EPP. I presume those prices are without the Truelife screen and bluetooth?

Yeah they would be without truelife and bluetooth. EPP is a discount available to employees of participating companies and their immediate families.

If you want to do some gaming then leave the processor but upgrade the card. The difference bwteeen the 2 processors in casual gaming will no be that great when compared to the difference between the video memory.

Make sure the 6 cell battery is enough for you. If you require 3+ hour of battery life you should look into the 9 cell battery.

I also had some bad experiences with the basic warranty. Given the frequent problems there seem to be with the new Dell serie, a total care warranty might be a good thing too.

If you want to keep it as low cost as possible then I'd recommend the graffic card upgrade and no change in the other configurations.

Thanks Kowell, I was thinking the same thing to be honest.

I will nearly always be on mains power so the 6 cell will be fine. Don't like the 9 that sticks out either!

Again, is it simple enough to cancel the order. Is it worth speaking to the agent I ordered with to try and get a deal for an upgraded spec or better to cancel and start over??

Talk to the sales rep as soon as you can, the worst he can say is "no". In wich case you cancel it (you are allowed a time delay to cancel your order though I don,t know exactly how long) and start anew.

In UK home I believe you have 7 days. You're good to cancel -- just call customer care.

Ive cancelled 4 orders before without anything bad happening, out of the 7 day rule which i think someone just pulled out of their ass. Cancel before it reaches your door and you will be fine.

    Consumers:
7.3 Consumers may cancel their Orders for any reason until, but no later than:
7.3.1 the end of the 7th "working day" (days other than weekend days & public holidays) after the day of receipt of the Product &/or of the Service Order Confirmation (as applicable); or
7.3.2 the end of the 7th working day after the date when all such information required by law is supplied.

Out of my ass, or Dell T&C. Either/or.

How likely will Dell want to do another deal if I look like cancelling my order? Can you sort out a new order with Customer Care or do they throw you back to Sales? What are the best tactics?

If I can get the 256MB GPU and the 1.8 Ghz for £580 I will be more than happy. After all that would only be a 4.5% price drop from what is advertised on the website.

    Great advice this guys. Thanks

I don't want to cancel this and end up with a worse deal lol!

If you have the strength and patience, you can wade through the entire "Who got the most off -- UK" thread in the Shipping Problems subforum for tips. :)

You have time to cancel anyway, if all goes wrong. Why not just call and see what kind of deal you can get on a new order with all the extra options you want. If you like it, you can request a price quote, cancel your old one and order the new one. If you don't, you can always go from there.

    Thanks Bertie

I thought of that but UK Dell reps always seem to insist on a name and a number to call back on. Would they not see I already have a Vostro on order from this info. I presume they have measures in place to stop people playing the reps off against each other?

Maybe I am being naive here!

Give them your first name and the mobile or something. I never give out my home number (and last name) until I am giving them my CC#.

And even if they see you already ordered a Vostro, no law against wanting 2. :)

    Good luck.

Have you got a link to this thread Bertie. I could not find it. Well, not one specific to the UK anyway. Cheers

Oh I'm sorry, I missed your post. Prob too late now :)() but, search for posts by user rachuk. I couldn't find the exact thread but she got an excellent deal on a Dell laptop (though a 1330) and talked about how she did it. There are also other tips in that same thread, from other users and are relevant to UK.
