How has your experience been with Vostro 1400/Inspiron 1420 screens? I've read a lot on the Vostro/Inspiron screen complaints, but those mostly seem to deal with the the 1500/1520 models. Additionally, I'm trying to figure out who the manufacturers for the Vostro 1400/Inspiron 1420 WXGA (1200x800) screens are, just to see what manufacturer I could get with my 2nd replacement. Also, I'm trying to get a general feeling of satisfaction regarding the 1400/1420 LCDs specifically.

You can find you screen manufacturer by going to Control Panel > Classic View > Device Manager > Monitors > Double-Click Generic PnP Monitor > Details Tab > Hardware ID in drop down menu. It should be the letters and number after the "MONITOR/"

I'm running a SEC3157, which was better than the AUO1644 I received in my first replacement. Even though the SEC has yellowish white colors, less even backlighting, a bit more light leakage, bad viewing angles and was dimmer than the AUO, I kept it because it had much less grain than the AUO. Still, on comparison with other manufacturers, the screen leaves a lot to be desired.

Poll results are 6-1 satisfied. Well it is good to know that some are happy with their Vostro 1400/Inspiron 1420 screens. Sometimes it is just hard to tell in a forum, as complaints are usually the only things that come up.

I put in a no, and wish I could put in 2 because my original SEC screen isn't bad on the grain issue but has bad viewing angles and the AUO replacement was grainy.

The AUO was just bad and the SEC is bearable but not what I would consider satisfactory.

What have you ended up doing as a result of the issues?

I have the same complaints, my SEC does have bad viewing angles, but I stuck with it because the AUO replacement had far more graininess. I've put in one more request for a replacement in hopes of getting a LG-Phillips, even though I don't even know if LG makes WXGA screens for the Vostro 1400.

That's a good point about the LG WXGA option...

The result is that I have a 2nd replacement on the way (actually the 1st replacement also had other issues that warranted it being sent back) and I am crossing my fingers on that it will be good...

Problem is the vid card in the second one would not overclock worth diddly which technically is not a fault but will make me very unhappy if I get one that can't after the first vostro's card overclocked like a champ...

At this point I am really starting to wonder where to cut losses because I have a bad feeling that a perfect 1400 is going to take a lot of work and swapping out parts to get...

Do you know if your screen is WXGA (1200x800)?

I put a no because I have the CMO screen and it had some terrible light leakage. Though I'm keeping it because the whites are white and the colors are much better than the replacement I recieved(SEC).

It's pretty sad that my $480 Toshiba Satellite is my preferred laptop when I'm home, while the Vostro sits in my case unused. The display on the Tosh is vibrant, crisp and bright with zero dead pixels. I paid $782 tax included for the Vostro and was hoping to use it for more than work.

I have the LPL0000 screen, which I think is the LG display. I was thinking about sending it back for a replacement, but from what I'm gathering here it's only downhill from the LG. There seems to be no good viewing angle for this display, the picture is somewhat grainy, and it's not very bright even at maximum brightness.

I'm going to be getting a call from tech support tomorrow, while my the tech I spoke to "researchs a solution." A real shame, because otherwise this laptop is slick, the battery upgrade to 9 cells was cheap and it's snappy.

I'm still waiting for the second replacement, but in the meantime, I think I've gotten over the somewhat questionable screen quality of Vostro 1400. It's not grainy, and the light leakage only shows itsel on black screens. However the viewing angles are really bad. Is a black screen supposed to turn all white if you move your head horizontally enough?

All in all, I could live with it if this next replacement is another grainy screen.

I have set up a replacement and got tech support and customer care communicating a bit. The CC guy asked me for the model numbers of the screens that people were having issues with and I gave them to him. He said he is going to send them off to the production managers.

Probably wont make a difference with my replacement or any difference at all, but it was worth a shot. If the replacement comes and I'm not happy I'm sending it back and getting my money back immediately. They guaranteed a "top quality" replacement, so we'll see.

I have a SEC4457 in my Vostro 1400 and I must say that I think it looks pretty good. My IBM T60's screen is a tiny bit sharper but annoyingly dark at the brightest setting.

    Definately a keeper!

I have AUO screen, it looks great. I think both AUO and SEC both has quality control issue, and most people get good screen and some get bad ones. I compare my AUO on my 1420 with every other laptops of my friends', I must say, my screen looks the great.

I have the LPL0000 screen. I'm not sure who manufactures that screen, but it seems okay to me. It's definately bright, but I suppose it could be a bit more crisp.
