I've received 3 m1330's (2 are replacements) and each one has had a high pitched whine. Do you guys say you can't hear it because the pitch is too high, or is it just nonexistent.
I'm beginnning to think all m1330's have this issue, it would make it easier to keep the notebook. I just received the replacement, I'll wait it out a little bit but I'm not sure if the sound will disappear.

Thats called the cpu "whine". Read the boards about it.

i've read about it and it seems that some people don't have it.
how could I have gone through 3 comps, and experienced some whine with all of them. bs.
I hope it wears off on this replacement since I just got it today -
probably those who dont have it just having "hard of hearing" problem

do you guys happen to know what RMClock does exactly? does it clock down the cpu?
-
There is a chance that the new Penryn CPU's coming out in perhaps a week will not have whine. -
I suppose its the same as on the 1520, there are notebooks built better and there are others which are built worse...some have it always, some have it only on battery, like mine.
It seems to me that it is not because of the CPU or the motherboard design, but because of bad an inconsistent quality control. -
As a matter of fact, yes, some of us are hard of hearing. The ability to hear high frequencies (above around 15 KHz) starts to decline at about age 20. Those of us in our mid-30s can't hear the "CPU whine" even if it's there - especially those of us who attended any U2 concerts in the '80s...

I have an m1330 for home and just got another m1330 for work......neither of them have the whine.
-
and you are over 20

I can hear frequencies of ~20KHz, as I can easily hear the 20Khz frequency that is being used to prevent teenagers from loitering, but cannot be heard if you are older (i'm 23).
However, I cannot hear any 'whine' coming from my m1330....either it's not there, or perhaps, it's being drowned out by the fan (which is always on minimum) or the HD, which i can only hear if I put my ear down on the palm rest...
I guess it's more a matter of luck... -

I'm 33 and high pitched noises annoy me. I returned a router that whined and I unplug my receiver at the outlet when not in use because it whines when it's off.
I just got my Dell XPS M1330 Wednesday with the T7500. When I first got it, no whine. When I reinstalled Windows on it, I could hear it go on and off a lot when most of the drivers were not installed. When I put all the drivers on, the whine disappeared again.
I think they probably all have the whine, but either people don't hear it or they're running drivers/software that causes it to stop. -

Want to trade one of your silent notebooks for my loud one? PLEASE? I wish you lived somewhere near me. I really have to see/hear this quiet m1330 for myself. I find it VERY hard to believe that you have 1 quiet one, much less 2. If you really have 2 quiet ones, you should go try your luck at the lottery . -
sweet, im 24, maybe i lost enough hearing!!

can i ask why you need 2 laptops? ellianth

So that was rather off-topic, the point being the only way to completely turn off a solid-state component is to unplug it.... -
I think that the coils or capacitors or something make the noises when electronics go into low power states. My receiver makes it when its off but still has power flowing through it. My Sharp LCD TV does it when I lower the backlight. And notebooks do it when they go into a low power mode.
I read that if it's a coil making the noise, it can be stopped by putting a dab of super glue on the coil. It's the wires wrapped around the coil oscillating in the magnetic field that make the sound. I haven't taken the time to open my receiver yet to try it. -
Novifex....
Just for the record, I'm in my early 40's....STILL listen to very loud music, and can hear High Frequencies VERY Well .
I do believe most people have the CPU whine and can't hear it very well or at all.
It has always been a curse for me. In all seriousness, You can blindfold me, walk me into your living room, and I can tell you If you TV is on or off while muted from 20 Ft away(Tube TV's, not LCD's)
I work in an office that is 15 X 15 and has 19 Computers and monitors, and all I hear all day is that high pitch whine from almost every one of them (one is even an older PIII that still has Windows 98 on it!!) It may be fans, HDD's , Im not sure, but I hear it all day.
When I first got my M1330, I heard a very slight whine, but honestly it sounds like a computer to me...after having it for over 2 months now, it seems like it is getting a little louder, but not enough for me to even think about returning it -

I am not sure you can call this CPU whine. There's definitely a whine but I don't think it's from the CPU.
I had an HP that had the T7500 chip and it whined on and off all the time. I couldn't tell a pattern. Then we had two Macbook pros, my wife's and her sister's, with the same T7500 CPU and both were completely silent. In my opinion, HP (and possibly Dell) have other things in there that are causing this as apple, evidently, doesn't have this issue using the same CPUs.
Unless, of course, apple is getting the better T7500s than everyone else. -

It is the southbridge, and I also had 2 m1330 both had the whine, not going to try a 3rd one. My dad who is 60 could hear the whine, but not as well as i can (24), my mother on the other hand can't hear it...
Are you guys hard of hearing? Or am I really unlucky
