Hi guys, I've been here reading for a while, but this is my first post. So I purchased a XPS M1530 a few days ago, and I start college next month in mid-June. However, I don't necessarily need a laptop for summer courses, but I will need one for fall. Is there any rumors of a XPS M1530 refresh between now and fall that should make me cancel my order and wait? Or should I just keep my order?

    Here is what I ordered:

    XPS M1530, Intel Core 2 Duo Processor T8300 (2.4GHz/800MHzFSB, 3M L2 Cache)
    Tuxedo Black Casing XPS M1530
    4GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm, for XPS M1530
15.4 inch Wide Screen WXGA+ TrueLife LCD with 2.0 MP Camera for XPS M1530 1440x900
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce 8600M GT
250GB 5400RPM SATA Hard Drive for XPS M1530
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition, English
    8X DVD+/-RW Slot Load Drive for XPSM1530
    Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy
    Intel 4965AGN Wireless-N Mini-card
    McAfee SecurityCenter 15-month
56 WHr 6-cell Lithium Ion P Primary Battery, for XPS M1530
2 Year warranty, with accidental damage & lojack
Dell Wirless 355 Bluetooth Module (2.0+EDR)

All for $1,356. Is that a good price for that build? What I am particularly looking for in terms of a refresh is either aesthetics or portability, or higher performing parts for either cheaper or the same price. The current parts will be fine for my uses. Thanks :)

You wont get that deal once refreshes come out for the XPS most likely in October. Get it now while you can get the best.

As a rule only buy technology when you need it. What you buy today will be more powerfull in 3 months for not much more...

yeah, it's one of those things where you just have to go for it. If you don't you never get anywhere.

My recommendation, get it now while its discounted so you can get the BEST for cheap. Once the new tech comes out, let it improve its own thing until Nehalem comes out, then wait for calpella next year before you think about getting a new notebook.

If you plan to play games, waiting will not do you any good. Chances are the next refresh if it comes out by June, will most likely not be all that big of a difference since the 8600GT is the best gfx card for 15.4 laptops that Dell will most likely offer. Sure Dell may throw in the 9500GS, but thats just the 8600GT comes out. There most likely will be a 9600GT, but that won't be coming out in the near future when Montevina comes out.

In other words, say next month Montevina comes out, Dell comes with a refresh, you buy it thinking you've got the best of new tech, then months after that, Dell comes out with a refresh of the montevina laptops with 9600GT, then you are screwed since:

    1) you paid the high price for new technology when something better came out
    2) graphics card is soddered onto motherboard so theres no way for you to manually upgrade

So in other words, you are much better off getting the laptop you want now.

^^^^^Agreed with above..If you want it now, just order it...Technology = ever, ever changing ;) :)

I am a self-proclaimed procrastinator!! :p  ;) And, I waited on getting my 1530 for a little bit. But, when I finally did order ~ I was really anxious to get it in my hands! Once, I did I couldn't believe that I had put off ordering it for so long ;) :)

Deciding to order = The hard part, Finally Ordering = Great relief, The Wait = Anxious, and wanting, right NOW....LOL

Well, that's how it went for me!!! LOL ;) :D  :p

I'm in the same predicament. I can't decide if I should buy now with the 25% coupon that ends on Wednesday or wait some more. Also I can't decide if I should get the protection plans. They seem like a really smart idea since its going to be a mobile computer but the price is a great stopper. Anyone think we will see a better discount before the new expensive items come out?

I didn't need one until the fall either, but I wanted to be able to use mine and get familiar with it during the summer, in case I had any issues. I figured I got a nice discount, so now was as good a time as any. You just have to be comfortable with the fact that whatever you buy will be improved upon fairly quickly after you get it.

Windows Vista rating wise, depending on what specs you get, the lowest is the Graphics Card if you have 4GB of RAM and a decent processor like the T9300. If you get the montevina, sure you'll up your score in the processor arena, but your gfx will still stay the same unless nvidia releases something like the 9600M GT. Plus, once montevina comes out, the 25% discount will definitely not be available so for the same price that you can get a T9300 2.5 ghz processor now, you might only be able to get one that is 2.0ghz. Think about it.

Yeah, according to the leak, today is the day that it should've been released... but so far nothing. XD I'm not really surprised considering Montevina isn't out yet.

Is it worthwhile for a college student to get the T9300 over the T8300? I was planning on the T8300 since 2.4ghz seemed good. I will be gaming a little but nothing over the top. Maybe choosing LED or T9300?

For me, a college student, my laptop has to serve as basically a desktop replacement in power, while being mobile at the same time. So yeah, T9300 would be great because of not only the fact its .1 ghz higher, but because it has a higher L2cache and front side bus. It will be beneficial for gaming and running apps.

I honestly don't know whether I'd choose the LED or the T9300 if I had to. I'd probably go with the T9300 just because it gives a significant increase in performance rather than just visual enchancements for display.

IF it serves and pretty much fufills your needs for now. Then you got the right machine.

If you got it to play games - then no machine will be the perfect fit (in the long run). Why? Because as any true gamer knows, whatever machine you got, it will be struggling in a year and a half or 2. And will have to upgrade anyways.

Yea, I'm waiting for a good deal for an XPS laptop. i don't really care about a newer version of a 1530 comming out. I just want a highend version of XPS 1530 for the best price.
