My inspiron 1720's power adapter is dead.... i checked my local dealer out here, but they only have the 90w adapter for the inspiron 1520, seeing how both are exactly similar in terms of specs except for the the larger screen and the addl drive bay in the 1720, will it be compatible ???

They're the same. You can even use the newer PA-4E 90W bricks if you want.

    what are the benefits ?

i heard the older gen power bricks (the one i had) have shorter life, due to some inefficient circuit design, i don't think i'll get the newer ones here in india, they still have the old gens.... guess it'll fail too after some time :(

Besides the newer bricks being slightly thinner and lighter... I don't know if there are any advantages. I've never actually had any of the old(er) (or newer) bricks fail on me, so I can't really comment on that either.

My old one died on me too, I got a newer 90 watt brick, works fine. Alot slimmer and lighter but that worries me for an AC adapter..
