I've noticed many accessories for laptops have a vista ready logo on them, yet wondered if external hard drives run fine on vista.

there is no such thing as vista incompatible external hdd´s.

and the vista stickers is just absolute nonsense. this just leads people to believe what the marketing people want. hdd´s without stickers are also working in windows vista.

Well i believe the monitors are referring to a different thing called hdcp compliant. They ALL will work, however, not all are hdcp compliant.

mmm, any external hard drives you'd recommend? Cnet gave the SimpleTech Mini USB 2.0 250GB Portable Hard Drive a high score of 8.1, and for a laptop i'm thinking that perhaps a big expensive 7200 rpm is too much.

what formafactor would that be 3.5" or 2.5".

i prefer the smaller 2.5" laptop hdd´s in an enclosure. since i like to travel light, these smaller one i like much more than the bulky 3.5" enclosures.
i posess a western digital passport II and i like it, i carry it around everyday. it´s bumping around in my bag for more than a year now, and it still works perfect. i would recommend this one.

If you are leaving it on your desk then get a 3.5" as they are cheaper and have more storage. If you want to take it with you, get a 2.5" drive.
