On the one hand they talk about only the following being returnble "all hardware, accessories, peripherals, parts and software that is unopened and still in its/their sealed package" but later on they talk about making sure you back up any personal data on a hard drive before returning it.
What gives - are opened laptops returnable during the 21 day period or not?
-
You can probably return the notebook after opening it, but they may charge you a 15% restocking fee if it's not defective. Without seeing the return policy I would guess that when they talk about backing up personal data they would be referring to sending the computer in for repairs, or if the computer is defective and you need to return it or get a replacement.

I believe laptops have a 15% restocking fee associated at Dell

You might also be charged for return shipping. Dell's return policy:
-
Generally, you have 21 days from your shipment date to return the laptop. Unless there is something wrong with the laptop, you'll be charged 15% restocking fee + shipping fees. Also, you need to make arrangements with dell before returning it, so be sure to call to get a RMA number.

Under some circumstances they will waive the restocking fee, but if you just decide you don't want the notebook, you're probably going to have to pay it. The return shipping is also negotiable; but you'd have to talk to a rep about that.
