    OK, so I've been thinking of putting some new thermal grease on the processor and GPU of my studio 15, but I am worried about my warranty. My notebook is practically brand new (3 weeks) so the warranty is still good for a long time. So, can I replace the grease without voiding it, or not? I can get to the CPU/GPU without breaking warranty seals (thanks dell!) so I suspect it's not a big problem, but I want to be sure.

    Anyone?

    Thanks,

    -Dan

    You can replace pretty much everything in the laptop without voiding the warranty. However, you need to be pretty sure of what you are doing as wrongly applying the paste and cooking the processor would not be covered by the warranty unless you had accidental cover too.

    As an example, dell will sometimes simply send users new parts for faulty laptops and tell the user to install them themselves. Only taking the laptop back to base if that fails.

    Gotcha. Thanks! I figured it would be OK, but I wanted to be 100%. And yes, I do know what I am doing...done this numerous times on desktops for myself and others.

    Thanks!

    The cooler it runs the longer it will last. My laptop has to make it through 4 years of college...Also, I want it to run cooler than it does now so I can push my settings in games and such a little bit. I'm running conservatively right now and I would like to push the envelope a bit more.

    Which games are you playing on your S15? I haven't gotten around to installing TF2, but I would like to see if I could. If I can play it reasonably well, then maybe I won't need my desktop.

    I play AOEIII (I know i'm lame)....but those who have tried it know how beautiful the graphics are. I use maxed out settings as a 1440x900 resolution....and the game runs flawlessly. I plan on trying assasin's creed and oblivion in the near future

    yay for dc++

    Team Fortress 2 (medium settings, 1024x768) and the original Halo. I may get around to installing Starcraft sometime in the future too...

    Yeah that's my point of view...I didn't buy this laptop to be a gaming machine (that's what the desktop is for!) so I am fine with medium settings on some 'less advanced' games. Crysis doesn't do much for me anyways!
