How much does the system weigh without batteries? What other possible ways are there to decrease the weight?

Alot less. If you are actually willing to do that, it will lighten it considerably. There isn't really any other weight-significant parts.

If you go and delete the system32 folder that decrease the weight.

    Get a Lenovo x61, XPS1330 or 1420 ;)

Remove the battery will remove about a pound but that defeats the purpose of a notebook. You may able to remove the optical drive to cut half pound but you need to open the case and need something to cover the bay.

1520 is what it is. if you want less weight, get a 1420.

You could remove the screen and lid. You shouldn't need that anyway unless you need to use it without an external monitor.

Well actually here are some options I thought of that you can do without harming your laptop:

    1) Take out a stick of ram from your computer when you don't need it, and then when it's back on the desk for some high performance gaming stick that back in.

    2) Don't carry your power adapter with you, or if you do carry it with you take out the battery and use the power adapter instead.

    3) Remove your DVD drive from the modular bay.

    4) If you are fortunate to have one of those expresscard remotes, don't stick it inside ur laptop when ur going around, leave it back on the desk.

There, I think by following all of these instructions, you should be able to shave off up to 1.5-2 lbs from your laptop. Viola!

I heard the hard drive weighs a lot... if you uninstall windows it removes a couple gigs of crap (18 if you have vista), that weighs a lot.

Comments on some of these posts...
    - Seriously, how much do you think a STICK OF RAM weighs...
    - Battery would (as 008 said) defeat the purpose of the laptop
    - Screen? If you don't ever want to take it around... it seems pretty hard to install and remove the screen when you want to bring it around. But if you didn't want to bring it around why do you care about the weight?
    - The power adapter's not part of the laptop.
    - THE EXPRESS CARD REMOTE WEIGHS PROBABLY 20 GRAMS

So depending on whether you actually want to bring your laptop around, you can either do some stuff w/ the battery and screen, or you're screwed.

waiiiit a second, storing stuff on the hard drive makes your hard drive weigh more? why does that sound absolutely ridiculous too me? data is all electronic, i didn't know 0s and 1s weighed something. does that mean my ipod is lighter when it has less songs on it?

And it's for threads like this that I bought the 1420. Having used my fiancée's e1505 I wasn't going to put up with another gigantic laptop.

I never knew files created weight. That does sound a little weird and bogus to me. Can someone explain? I'm not trying to be ignorant. I'd love to know. Really! So if I filled up my 160gig hard drive all the way, how much extra weight will it carry?

    this better be sarcasm

if not, then i don't know how you manage to breath

the people mean storing more stuff on your hd causing more weight as a JOKE

your HD remains the same weight no matter how much you store

its not like as if free space on your HD = theres no 0 or 1 in place

furthermore, its not as if changing the polarity of the slot from 0 to 1 would change weight

    ITS A FREAKING JOKE

Of course he was being sarcastic, anyone knows that something that isn't tangible can't possibly weigh anything.

the only logical way of lightening these beasts is to buy a 6 cell battery over the 9 cell!. when I had my inspiron I had a 6 and 9 cell and its about .5 -.3 kgs' in difference. also the smaller battery pack idea was a good one.

1520's aren't really made for portability, more for their power
