I would love to have HDMI out from my 1400 to plug into my home theater easily ... is there any easy way to accomplish it (I would love something like a USB dongle)

probably not... do u have a DVI port? if so, u can use dvi-hmdi cable or adapter.

I think the Vostros just have VGA.
Anyway, you should be able to buy a VGA -> HDMI adapter. The quality won't be any better than regular VGA, but at least you'll be able to plug it in. You also won't get HDCP (content protection) support, so movies that require this might not play in high-resolution.

USB doesn't have enough bandwidth to carry video, so you won't find a USB dongle.

VGA=>DVI=>HDMI would certainly get a pretty interesting amount of signal loss.

Sadly I don't think you can go VGA - DVI - HDMI as for DVI to go HDMI it must be DVI-D and when you go VGA - DVI it's DVI A.

The only way to go from analogue to digital is through a converter box and that would cost around $200+.

I was hoping there was somehow to squeeze a direct digital feed from the vostro but with only a VGA and Svideo out I guess that's not going to happen without some expensive hardware. :(

DVI -> HDMI shouldn't produce any signal loss because it's all digital.
As for converting the VGA to a digital signal... well, that's either going to happen inside the monitor (if the TV/monitor has a VGA input) or it'll happen in an adapter.

Do you know of any adapters that can do an analogue digital conversion? I was under the impression it doesn't happen... I would love it if I could find something that does. I have no problem with VGA quality picture... it's just that I have an HDMI switcher and an HDMI cable already going to my projector, I would love to avoid running yet another fat cable up...

I think HDMI just doesn't carry an analogue signal no matter how you try and the receiving device wouldn't even think to look for an analogue signal on it so I am thinking that wouldn't work out so well...

In all likeliehood it will just be one more big cable running up my wall to my projector... :(
