Is it decent at least? I haven't gotten it yet, and so I bought a Linksys I was planning on returning if the free one is good.

I am going to receive the free router too, but since I have old Linksys WRT54G running perfectly, its going straight to ebay. Since I am not too familiar with Netgear branded routers, I dont know what to say regarding keeping the router, I guess other friendly people might help you better, sorry about that.
For your information: The router had $10 Mail In Rebates, but I dont know if MIR is eligible for people who received it for free. -
From personal experience, I think Netgear makes great networking products. I find them to be EXTREMELY user friendly (sometimes a little too much for advanced users).
I have set up two 624 routers, a print server and a wireless PCI adapter. Each of them was a pleasure to configure. Netgear's UI is very complex yet easy to use for anyone.
I've heard of people having a little trouble with the 614, which I anticipate is the free one. I wouldn't worry too much if you've got some networking prowess. You should know what to expect with any wireless configuration -
I ditched the Netgear I had for a Buffalo, mainly because the netgear would do two things that were annoying:
1. drop wireless connections quiet a bit
2. "Freeze" more than is normal -- i.e. would indicate connected, but would instead not be able to connect to gateway. Would require a hard reboot to fix. Ni such problems with the Buffalo. With that said, its free and is defintely worth that. -
I had that problem with my netgear router all you had to do was update the drivers on it -
I tried updating the firmware. It didn't help. But, perhaps my WGT624 (I think was the model I had) was an older revision, since I do know they released multiple "versions" of the firmware that weren't compatible with each other.

I'd keep it, personally. Old routers (sort of 3 years +) can often stop working, so keep the Netgear as a backup.
Anyone use that free Router you get?
