Not sure what you mean by 1420 - is this a brand of care reader? But on my notebook (refer to sig), I regularly use XD cards from my camera to upload photos. It works fine. The reader has no specific name, but its a 5-in-1. Not sure if this helps.

    Good luck.

EDIT: Sorry - 1420 refers to a Dell doesn't it? The link showed up when I posted - and I didn't know this was the Dell forum.

Yes, that's what I think too but Dell support really make me mad. They shipped me a wrong 9 cell battery. So I called support to ask for the correct battery and mentioned about their mistake on xD support. The website still advertises the 1420 to have 8-in-1 media card reader and the user manual actually lists xD as one supported format. The support kept told me to check the ExpressCard slot?????? Then asked me to take pictures of the slot?????? Can't they check the notebook themselves with a xD card? At the end, the rep told me to ship the notebook back to find out why I couldn't insert a xD card. He said the turnaround time is around 4 days. But after two weeks I am still without my notebook :-(

Today I spoke to a support manager and he said the depot told him the card reader was working properly! Go figure.

The Inspiron 1420 is a nice notebook but Dell support is definitely among the worst.

    Guys,

Not sure if this helps but I found the readers that Dell is using on this their new laptops to be very different for us XD users

Take a close look at your card slot, I first thought the same about the reader in my Vostro 1500. It is marked as only SD/MS but it had drivers for XD. If you look really close (at least in the 1500) the slot is divided into an upper and lower section. At first I thought the lower section was simply a gap in the case, but I tried a cheap XD card and it worked !!

Is that with a 1420 or 1500/1520. I had a 640m and the xD is inserted upside down on the bottom side. I couldn't fit my xD into the card slot on my 1420.

I'm using the Vostro 1500 but it should be the same for the 1420s if it says 8 in 1.

No problem, glad I could help

Happy to report that XD type M and Type H work well, much faster then the Expresscard adapter I first tried.

The design change, and lack of a proper labeling/documentation, has to be triggering support calls

Finally got the notebook back after 3 weeks of waiting (just for the xD card reader). But I still couldn't insert a xD card to my 1420. I tried up-side down, downside up but no luck.

Can someone verify if the 1420 works with xD.

I used it yesterday and it worked fine...

on a side note it took me about 5 min to figure out how to insert it correctly.

But it says its an "8-in1" reader.

you insert it "sticker side up" with the metal reader thingys facing down. When i finally was able to get it in, I was putting it in lower than I originally aimed.

I hope that made sense and didn't just confuse you more.

I had no problems reading an XD card from my camera in my Inspiron 1520. Like cmorr said, be careful inserting the card and you should be fine. contacts down (I think). SD seemed to work just fine as well.
