I really would like to know whether the combination works, does areo* perform well at 1680x1050 and while supporting an extra monitor?

There must be some reason Dell says SXGA is not supported with Vista and I really would like to know what that is.

As would I. I orderd mine before the issue came up. I'm hoping it's just a glitch or an error on dells part. I contacted there customer care, but there response was not one of much help. I posted it in the thread entitled "vista/sxga/ati compatibility issue" There are a couple other people wondering the same thing you are. Vista is going to run on the sxga monitor, there shouldn't be any question about that. If anything, it's a matter of performance. That's just my guess. Honestly, it doesn't really make since.... Hopefully someone can figure this out soon.

I got the free Vista upgrade, so, they must have thought it worked at one time. :dunno

    PS 1680x1050 is WXSGA+, not SXGA+...

My friend is running Vista on his Inspiron 6400 with the ATI MR X1400 (a.k.a. E1505, ordered from Dell New Zealand) and it has a WSXGA+ (1680x1050) screen. He has been using Vista RC2 for a month now like I have and we've been exchanging notes/experiences with it. And we play Guild Wars every night.

I can say for sure that it has no compatibility problems whatsoever.

And I really doubt the resolution of a screen can be the source of OS incompatibility since the... Windows 95 days.

I spoke with a person from Tech support and a person in sales at Dell. The website is in error. There are NO issues with the 1680 x 1050 Monitor, or the x1400 or Intel Integrated Graphics chip and Vista. Said that there might be something about the x1300 and Aero...but that was it. When you check out the system requirements of Vista...the ATI cards and even Intel card are well in excess of system requirement. PLUS...monitor resolution is determined by video drivers...NOT the monitor itself. When I purchased my desktop Viewsonic VX2025wm...The 1680 x 1050 resolution wasn't available until I loaded the monitor drivers AND the latest ATI Drivers for my X800XT. Had Vista running on them as well as an old Toshiba Laptop with a GeForce Go5600 on a 1600 x 1200 screen. Dell admitted to the error and said it would be fixed ASAP...no need for panic

BTW...my machine has a label on it that says "Vista Capable".

I briefly tested Vista RC1 on my new Inspiron 6400 (Core 2 Duo T7200, WSXGA (1680x1050), 2Gb 667mhz Ram and Ati x1400) and it worked fine - Aero worked flawlessly although there is a beta Vista driver available from ATI which is worth checking out. It was only a brief test before I put XP Pro back on but can confirm it works fine.

I got my WSXGA+ E1505 last night and Vista RC2 seems to work just fine. I do have three unrecognized devices listed as "Base System Device", the only hardware I can't seem to find in the Device Mgr is the media card reader.

I'd also like to ask if anyone else here has the 256MB X1400 and is it being reported as only having 128MB dedicated video memory? Display Settings - Advanced Settings - Adapter Tab. Don't wanna rail on Dell and be wrong!

OK, I just found out the 256MB is 128 dedicated and 128 shared....
