I was wondering if anyone who order the XPS M1530 with either the 1440x900 or 1680x1050 Hi-Res monitor option had actually received their computer yet? I ordered mine on Friday the 21st around noon w/ next day shipping and received a shipped email on Monday but no computer yet. I am not complaining or in any big hurry except I want to play with it. :) I was just wondering if any other lucky soul had received theirs yet.

any suggestions on how you "haggled" for a discount?

also any info on the 3GB ram you just got??? Is that a 1GB dimm + 2GB dimm or is that a 2 x 1.5GB setup? is it just a gimic to get that or will it actually be utilized by 32bit vista operating system?

    My total was $1,175.24 :D

that was with a $300 coupon and I will receive $250 gift certificate in a few weeks. However, it came with 1GB of ram and 1 year warranty with the low resolution screen

I am trying to get an upgrade in warranty and a higher resolution screen now, but its not working with the dell boys lol

Yes, it's very worth it. I have the 1280x800, and it's all right, but I wish I had more real estate.

I decided that the 1680x1050 would be just a little too much, but because I couldn't have gotten as good a deal I went with this.

If you're unsure, go to your local best buy or circuit city. The default screen resolution they have on most of their 15" laptops is the 1280x800. It's more than adequate. See if it will suit your needs. My friend was debating the same thing and once seeing the resolution in person decided that nothing higher was necessary.
You do get a tad more useable space with the higher resolution but really think of the apps you'll be using and if you really need it. Another thing to remember is the with higher resolution, you loose brightness of the display and it will also demand more of the video card.
If you decide that you want to lower the resolution on a higher res, remember too that your image will become fuzzy as they are best viewed in native res.

eh it's not worth it for me. i would have to give up my $112 student discount, plus and extra $50 for the screen, so in total I would be paying $162 for a slightly better resolution...not worth it

been trying to figure this out. was looking to get the 1060x1080 res for the real estate provided, run alot of excel and web at the same time. but i also like to game in my spare time. how bad will the fuzziness be downsizing res to 1200x800 for gaming and is it necessary. some say it effects thier fps alot and some say not so much.

Just curious, but are you sure you would be losing the discount? The reason I ask is because I used my EPP (Employee Purchase Program) and online I could only choose the 1200 x 800. So I called and the CSR was able to upgrade the resolution to 1440 x 900 (for $50 more of course) but I still got 12% off with my EPP. So if you're not sure, you can call. And if it really matters to you, ask to speak with a manager and I'm SURE this can be done.

OK, hold on there, you're spreading some false information. The WXGA+ screen is not dimmer than the WXGA, check the manual (WSXGA+ is slightly dimmer). These machines have a quality video card, do you really think the bump in resolution is going to bring it to its knees? Yes, Best Buy laptops are mostly WXGA, for the most part they are budget machines targeted to low level users.

I received my 1440x900 m1530 yesterday and the extra resolution is significant and well worth a measly $50. Icons are not too small, the screen is clear and bright. WXGA belongs on 12" laptops.

Last I checked, my local Best Buy had the Asus G1 with WSXGA+ screen. It was the only 15.4" they had with greater than WXGA, but great for comparing and convinced me that WSXGA+ is the way to go.

I will have to go back and find the spec sheet that listed the WXGA+ as being slightly dimmer than the WXGA. I did see this and was using that information.

dude, I have no clue what you're talking about??

Either way, I can't find the spec sheet I was looking for but at any rate, if you look at the original post where you said I was providing misinformation, I never said the WXGA was brigther than the WXGA+. I just said with higher resolution you get a dimmer display which in itself is not untrue.

Your post explains why WXGA is better than higher rez screens, and how anything above that will tax the video card. "(WXGA is) more than adequate." Yet you then go and buy a WXGA+ screen after bashing them.

You seem to be running off at the mouth. ;)

Well, it is a fact that higher resolution will tax the video card more. I didn't say it would criple the system. That is something you seem to have read into what I typed. It's was just something to think about for people who want every ounce of performance(and there are ppl on this board like that).

I did not bash the screens at all. You assumed by me saying that text is smaller on higher resolution screens and slightly dimmer that it was bashing. Whether that is a bad thing or not is subjective. I never said it was bad or crappy just pointed it out as a difference. That is certainly not bashing. Unlike a lot of people, I tend to point out the pros and cons of things and there are certainly some pros low resolution just as there are some to high resolution and vice versa. My statements were pretty general and when I say high resolution it means everything higher than WXGA, not just WXGA+.

I ordered a WXGA+ because it suits my needs. Someone else may say that WXGA sucks and that WXGA+ is the bomb(which is bashing). I would never make such a statement because what is my gold mine may not be someone elses.

Ultimately, I don't think I'm the one running off at the mouth. :p

If you go to your student discount page then try to customize the m1530, you will not be able to even see the options for the 1440x900 or 1680x1050 screens. I spoke with a representative at the home department and someone at the member purchase program department. I ended up even speaking to someone at a specialist, but they were unable to offer me the m1530 with the 12% student discount which would bring down the price of my laptop by $200! I ended up ordering it anyways.

If anyone has had luck with this, please let me know. I can always call up customer service and ask them to give me the discount.

I ordered using the MPP program for my school and I was able to get the 1440x900. I did have to call my sales rep as I couldn't do it online. If you are still having trouble and want to get the higher resolution, PM me and I'll give you the sales rep info and hopefully he can get you set up.

Those of you who have the 1680 what do you think? Are you happy? I am wondering if I should have gotten the 1440 but the sales rep thought I should get the highest res because of my photography needs. Will it really be that small?

you probably made a good decision in going with the highest res for the 15" since you'll be editing images. A lot of photographers opt for 17" or bigger laptops but sacrifice portability. Although, the sales rep may have had other motives as they try to sell you as much as possible. =) The resolution you chose will be the best you can get for images on this laptop. Spending a lot of time reading text may become cumbersome. You could probably just scale up the font DPI if it does become to hard on your eyes and that should help.

I will be editing photos on my XPS and doing digital graphic design as well and I am very happy that I decided go with the 1680x1050! I don't find it to small at all. I'm sure that I would have been very disappointed with anything else.

By default things will be a bit small, but it should be OK. I went with the 1440x900 and it is a big improvement over 1200x800. Despite comments by others in this thread (who don't have this laptop), the screen scales very well to other resolutions. So hopefully your 1680 will do the same, allowing you to work in 1440 when desired.

Hawk444, Since you have the larger resolution can you turn it all the way down to the 1280 one and take a screenshot of a game running at full screen. Im curious how bad it looks stretched and not at native resolution.

The way to help folks that have WXGA decide if they want to go for WSXGA+ is to take photos of all three resolutions and size them to 1280x800. Then the photos could be displayed full screen simulating the higher resolution on the existing screen (keeping in mind that some loss of quality occurs along the way so the real thing will be sharper). Lot of work though. If I do get the 1530 with WSXGA+ in January, I'll see if I can tackle that.

dam, why can't you have native on both 1440 and 1680 resolutions so both are very clear. would makes choice and life so much easier.

i have been using a 1600x1200 on a dell insprion 8100 for years and now started to find it a little small. i'm now using 1280x800 on my dell xps m1330 right now and would prefer something higher. so i'm guess 1440x900 would be perfect for me on a 15.4", that is if i decide to go for the m1530.
