Well, currently I have an old eMachines desktop and have probably reformatted it 4 or 5 times. And frankly, I have no idea what's so difficult about the process that it has so many people asking questions and writing guides to it. Though, maybe there's something more to it on new laptops or Dells or something!

    Here's my checklist:
Back up everything you want to keep. I have a "Keep for Reformatting" DVD of all the necessary programs I add to the computer (ie: Nero, AIM, Firefox, etc.) as it saves a ton of time of having to hunt them all down and download them from a fresh computer.
Pop the reformating disk into your computer.
    Restart said computer.
Then the computer will ask you if you want to reformat. Then it will again ask you if you're sure that's what you want to do.
Then, it only took about 10-15 minutes on my old computer till it was done!
Then, the first thing I did was install all Windows Updates (it took a long time, but I was rebooting with a 4 year old Win XP).
Then, throw on all your programs and enjoy!

thanks for your help, i added southerngirl to MSN, but it turned out i didn't need her. Everything went just fine. I reformatted, reinstalled windows, and all the drivers, and fixed the media direct thing. All good!
