My vostro was painfully slower than it should have been and i was really dissapointed at first. Now this thing flies after i reinstalled vista and wiped all the dell partitions off! Has anyone else noticed a huge speed improvement like i did?
-
how did you wipe the partitions out?
-
It is common knowledge that manufacturers install a lot of bloatware with the systems, so of course a fresh install of the OS and programs will make things much much faster.
-
no, thats the point of the dell vostro's there is no bloatware. I make images at work all the time and i know what dell normally ships on them. But i scoured through my vostro and there wasnt anything extra installed. It was just slow even after many defrags.
deleting partitions is easy, you can do it windows disk management, or when you reinstall the os just go to advanced and delete them (of course you need a disk) -
Maybe something w/ the factory settings on windows slowed it down.
I don't know, I reinstall Windows on every new machine I get regardless of what I see or don't see running in processes. -
Actually Vostro still has bloatware... just a lot less of it. But if you want more bloatware on your Vostra Dell gives you plenty of opportunities to add it back in.
-
My Vostro came with ZERO bloatware. After turning off crappy services (Disk thrashers) like Indexing, System restore, Search and Ready Boost ... my sytem is noticeably faster.

How did you turn off System Restore? I know how to make it not take them automatically by not checking the drives, but did you find a background process as well? -
I requested the Vista basic DVD, got the premium DVD, and installed on another partition. I notice the startup menus loads FASTER.
For example... when i click start > accessories (link took forever to expand). -
I permanently disabled windows defender, superfetch, readyboost and indexing from services.msc and disabled restore by unchecking all the drives.
-
turned off ready boost? Default is off... ready boost uses external memory card that is atttached

I've found that the indexing on Vista sometime stumbles and falls over and the whole PC bogs down until it has repaired and recovered itself.
I do only index the Start Menu and the Users directories via Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Indexing Options\Modify, and, although it is s-l-o-w, I am now running a manual rebuild of the index via Control Panel\System and Maintenance\Indexing Options\Advanced rather than hoping it will recover itself. -
i think disabling superfetch is worth considering only if you have 1gb or less memory. Vista's main technological selling point is superfetch...
-
I haven't noticed any slowness since I received it. Everything has been great.

I agree with the first and the last ones: Disabling Windows Defender and disabling restore by unchecking all the drives. I also disabled the Windows Firewall. I run alternatives. -
When you re-install Windows Vista, do you have to activate it?
-
Nope, I did not have to activate windows when I reinstalling using OEM disk
-
Great! That's one thing I like about Dell. All the recovery discs come pre-burned and you don't need to go through long and stupid steps to by-pass activation when you re-install.
If Dell can just ship me my notebook finally... -
The first thing I do with a laptop before even turning it on is pop in the OS CD/DVD and wipe it/reinstall. I couldn't be bothered with the crap that they put on there which is supposed to "benefit" you.
I wish Dell would give the option of just a CLEAN OS Installation where they install the OS and all necessary drivers......THAT'S IT!
Anyone notice how much faster their pc is after reinstalling vista?
