Sometimes, I think after Standby-resume, when I plug in a USB drive, I get the message "This device may run faster if connected to a USB 2.0 port. For a list of availbale ports, click here.", or something to that effect. Obviously, on my M1330, they're all USB 2.0.
What gives?
-
do u use a USB hub?
-
your device may be 1.1
-
do you have the updated service packs?
are you running XP or vista -

I ran into the same problem on my Vostro 1500. Never really came up with a solution. I don't always get that message, just sometimes. Doing some research I found this article at Microsoft. I'll see what this hotfix is and get back to you. Not sure how OS-relevent the article is. I have XP SP 2, maybe you don't.
Edit: Doing more research I think that hotfix is related to a different issue. Crap! -
What's a hub anyways? I'm thinking I'm using one under XP SP2:
-
Okay, root hub must just mean it's built into my computer.

Thanks, guys. This is an M1330 running Vista, installed from Dell's included Vista DVD. It is connected directly to the USB port on the laptop with no hub. We're talking about a SimpleTech USB 2.0 External 2.5" HDD, or a mouse, or even the built-in fingerprint reader, I believe, which has even gotten "disconnected" in the past, too, despite being always connected, of course, as its connection is internal.
I installed the Intel driver package first, and Device Manager has everything looking fine. All drivers are the latest possible Dell Drivers.
Any ideas? -
A root hub is not the same as an external USB hub. The root hub is inside the computer.
-
samuel, go into device manager and uninstall the USB drivers and restart the computer. upon restart, you should get a prompt saying "new hardware has been found" and wants you to install the USB drivers. try doing that and see if that solves any problems. it may just be a fluke driver conflict or something tiny got corrupted upon installation.

I had the same issue with my external hard drive but swept the problem under the rug.
I'll try brianj320's idea and see if it works. -
Thanks. -
I don't know if this is relevant, BTW, but my startup time is terrible, too. It takes only 15 seconds from logo to when I see the blue LED flash on the built-in webcam, then the screen stays black for like 15 seconds, then it finally comes on and says welcome. I never had that 15 second delay before, and it has nothing to do with TMM, because I turned that off and on and it made no difference. This is even with nothing plugged in to the external USB ports.
-
I've gotten that too, after wakeup. It only seems to happen rarely to me, though, so I just kind of swept it under the rug as well, with a restart.
Hopefully, it's some some kind of Vista or driver issue that will eventually be resolved via an update.
Anyone know why USB comes up as "Can run faster if connected to USB 2.0 port"?
