I got my shipping notice yesterday on my XPS17 and started to jump up and down doing a happy dance when i noticed that Dell shipped the computer 4 states away from where I live with overnight delivery.
I called immediately and they were very nice. They said it was their mistake and that they'd contact FedX and change it to my address. They said my computer would only be delayed 24-48 hours because of this error. I should emphasize: everyone I spoke with was awesome and apologized profusely and really were just exceptional to deal with.... but ......
I asked if they would issue me a new tracking number and they said, "No. Your current tracking number will just get updated with your actual address."
So now I am hitting refresh on FedX every hour -- it is still showing that it is being delivered 4 states away. No change, uggg. And worse, now FedX is showing that my new computer is sitting in xyz town ready to go out on the local truck for delivery tomorrow morning.
OK. So if FedX gets Dell's update before they deliver it it will be ok. But I called Dell at 9:30 this morning (Friday)! Now it is 1AM, Saturday [15 hours later!] and FedX still doesn't know not to ship it there!! ?!?!
What happens next? Does someone get my computer open it up, mess with it, send it back to dell in a week and then I get it? If they sign for it, do I have to wait another month for a new build? Will Dell just tell those people to send it on to me, but what if they've opened it first? Presumably those people ordered some Dell too, if they sign for it will they think it is theirs? I guess I shouldn't freak out yet. But dang Dell-- do you think you could contact FedX the same #$% day-- you had all day Friday to get in touch with FedX and that box will be delivered today. Why doesn't FedX know yet???? Come on!!!
So, anyone had this happen? How'd it turn out? What next?

Sometimes FedEx's system does take some time to update; you might want to try calling them and speak with a representative. They will be unable to change the delivery address on your request though as Dell is the paying customer for the shipment.
Dell has an obligation to get you a new, working computer, untouched by another individual. If it gets delivered to the wrong address Dell will have to provide you with a replacement laptop as a new order. That's simply all there is to it.
It also isn't your responsibility to deal with the other people who get the laptop...Dell will handle all of that. -
Thanks for the post Greg. The word from Dell as of Monday PM is that it could be here late this week or next week and that "they are following up closely."
That update came after me calling this morning and being on the phone for 30 minutes. Why did I call this morning? Because FedX is showing that they couldn't deliver the package Sat. AM as they "could not locate recipient" but that it still is sitting in xyz city in the far away state. There has been no change to the FedX tracking number since Saturday, despite assurances from Dell and FedX that when the box is rerouted that same tracking # will be properly updated.
I must say everyone I have spoken with at Dell has been professional, courteous and empathetic. But the computer was supposed to be delivered on the 9th and the ambiguity about "this week or next week" when I can see that it is sitting at a FedX office with no changes to the status is really annoying.
Anyone have experience with dell shipping to the wrong address?
