I'm happy with mine; I have a 1400. I haven't had any major problems. The battery was slighly wobbly, but some tape fixed that. And the screws in the back strip kind of easily, but that's partially my fault for not being forceful enough. Then it took me like a week to figure out how to insert an xD card into the card reader, but it works. Oh and the outer casing, which is very sturdy, picks up oil from your hands fairly easily. Go to a Mac forum, and I'm sure you'd get a similarly negative impression of failing Macbooks with grainy screens.

    ex: http://www.appledefects.com/wiki/index.php?title=MacBook

Oh and on the up side. My Vostro is peppy. Upgrading the ram took like thirty seconds, after I got the right screw-driver. Windows Basic is acceptable. Absolutely NO junk came on the laptop. Looks decent. Good feel to it, solid and sturdy. Oh and it definitely doesn't get even close to as hot as my sister's Toshiba or our old Thinkpad A22e.

    i absolutely love mine!!

i have none of the problems anyone complains about...

my screen is beautiful, it's always cool..i never hear the fans..i play games constantly, the video quality is amazing...

my battery doesnt wobble, my lid is perfect, the legs on the bottom are perfect, the laptop isnt lopsided... etc etc etc...

keep in mind, out of 100 people who buy a laptop, maybe 10-20% are going on forums and then out of that group, the only people who post are the ones who complain...

not many people look for an outlet cause they want to say good things about their stuff....they need an outlet so they can complain to others...

there's nothing wrong with those people...it's just dont let yourself be fooled...if your laptop was working..you'd be playing a game or doing something useful..not reading forums and writing about how things are broken...unless you are just addicted to reading this stuff..(like me!)

    anyways, good luck

I love mine. I'm not completely convinced if I want a laptop or the money, but thats not the fault of the Vostro.

The screen is fine, none of that light bleeding or grainyness that others were complaining about, and my headphones don't produce static unless I almost max the volume, which I would NOT do. The speakers on this are so loud that I keep the volume on one bar from mute and its still too loud for my taste. Its just quality system overall. The battery wiggles a tiny bit, but since I usually take mine out when its on AC power if its at 100 percent, it doesn't even matter. Not that it would anyway.

I'm very happy with mine, I do have a battery wobble, but I really don't mind it. I do have some light bleed at the bottom of my screen (which isn't grainy) and the touchpad needed some adjusting, but I couldn't be happier.

I love mine. For the price you can get two vostros for the price of a macbook. Mine gets hot and the rubber bumpers aren't exactly even...but for the price, well lets just say I have boughten another one cuz my wife wanted one for herself. We both love ours.

Speaking as someone who was narrowed down to a MacBook and a Vostro 1400, I'm really impressed with my Vostro.

I bought the 1400 because I think it looks very sleek like the MacBook, and its pretty portable. I was all geared up to install Windows XP and fight with drivers when I got this computer, but after using Vista for a few days I think I'll leave it as is.

I haven't experienced any of the problems in here that I've read about - nothing but good about this laptop. My screen is absolutely great, better than my Samsung CRT DF and I don't get any static in my headphone jack.

    Good luck!

People mostly post in these forums when there is a problem. But that doesn’t mean no one is happy their Vostro.

You can see few satisfied customers above, and I’m sure there are thousands more who haven’t posted here.

I signed up here because I was looking to purchase a Vostro and wanted to read opinions on it. I went with the WXGA screen instead of the WSXGA or WXGA+ because of the forums and now that I have the laptop I'm very happy. The screen is great, the speed is great, and the price is great. I even bought it for a discount through the dell outlet as a Scratch and Dent product, and the only way you could tell it was Scratch and Dent is by looking for the little red sticker on the underside of the laptop that says so. It looks perfect.

My 1500 is great, except for a design flaw with the lid (not secure, moves up and down considerably when closed); don't care, since I use it as a desktop replacement.

    I bought mine with 1.6Ghz C2D, 1GB DDR2, 8400M GS, 1440x900 LCD, 120GB HD and use it in place of my Athlon 64 3500+, 2GB DDR2, 7600GT, 1680x1050, 200GB+320GB HD. I'm pretty satisfied with it's performance and stability.

Forums usually show only responses from people who've had a problem. There are many happy owners here for both notebooks.

You also need to consider that the Vostro is a hugely popular laptop and appeals to a much bigger market, hence you will find more users with Vostros than with Macbooks.

I had the 1420 for a few days before returning it in "exchange" for a 1400. The build quality was nice, and the screen was flawless (although a tad dark for my tastes with the anti-glare). Its weight was a little higher than I would have liked, but this was clearly stated on the Dell site. My new 1400 from the outlet arrives on Tuesday, I will post more on it then.

I love my Vostro 1500, and am so glad I went with it. I had been looking at the Toshibas & HP's and was close to getting one, but for the same amount of money I got a heck of a lot more laptop with the Dell. Mine has a great (AUO) WXGA glossy screen and is as solid as can be. You won't hear me complaining.

I think I'm going to have to send mine back for a replacement unit. My headphones jacks both have the "clicking" problem. The screen could have been of slightly better quality, but at least its the SEC and not the AUO.

I love my Dell Vostro 1500 too (see my signature for specs - and I have an AUO 2077 WXGA+ [1440 x 900] LCD screen, so they're not all bad, even if you get an AUO!).
