I was admiring my E1705 today and noticed the SD/MMC 5-in-1 card reader which I have yet to use or even touch. One thing that struck me was that there is no "dummy" card in to protect the slot. Did I lose this piece? I was looking at some of the pictures from reviews on this site and noticed that some notebooks had the dummy card and some didn't.

Does anyone else have a missing dummy card? Is it a big deal that it is missing? Should I find something to protect/cover the open slot?

Sorry if this seems a little obsessive, but I just wanted to make sure my notebook is "normal" and protected...

my m1210 does not have one, and it doesnt need it, dont worry :)
otherwise youd have to stick a cover on every single port on the compter

Well if the XPS line doesnt have it, then I am sure it's not necessary ;)

Thanks for the help and quick reply! I can rest soundly knowing I didn't lose an imporant piece of my laptop already...

There was a dummy card for my e1405. I sent that back (long story) and ended up getting the e1505. I just checked and no dummy card. hum..........

I didn't get a dummy card for my card reader slot - I find that most notebooks with similar card readers to the ones in the E1705 don't have dummy cards either, even in high-end laptops.
IMO, I wouldn't want a dummy reader because the card would stick out a bit when inserted.

Yeah I dont have a dummy card in my 5-1 reader either. Theres one in the ExpressCard slot though, and im glad since thats a big hole. Im really not worried about it being open either. Its not that big an opening and its not noticable my anymeans. But I guess some models just have them, but its not required.

Why does it even matter? I don't think it's as much for protection as it is for indicating what the card reader is. People are so obsessive compulsive about their computers having problems.

My 2 year old Compaq did not have any dummy card in the card reader slot, yet the reader functions as good as new despite being subjected to the worst of heat & Dust in the Indian subcontinent

No dummy in my e1505. I think you'd have more chance of catching dust in the USB ports anyways...

I don't have one in my M1710, but the M140 has one. I've thought about saying I lost it for the M140 and getting a replacement for the M1710 to protect the slot.

Im really not worried about at all. What I am worried about as far as ports on my computer are my USB ports. Im especialy worried that one day I will break off the USB dongle for my mouse, ruining 1 of 4 ports, and my mouse reciever.

Get a BT mouse, and install a bluetooth reciever radio in your m1210 if you already do not have one.

I have BT in my notebook, but I game a lot and BT mice are horrible for gaming. My friend has one and I hate it. Besides I love the laser of my V400, I dont think I could ever go back to optical, let along optical and BT. Now its not that its a huge worry of mine, its just that its a bigger one for me than my 5-1 getting clogged with dust.

I use the one that came with the 640m on my M1210, it sticks out a couple of millimeters, but i prefer knowing that slightly large slot is protected.

I have the dummy card for both the SD slot and the PCMCIA2, they don't stick out at all and offer some protection. It really doesn't matter though.
