The problem is every now and then vista will "freeze" the current task you're doing for 20-30seconds. It shows the hard drive is constantly on, but you can move the mouse or open other windows.
It was driving me nuts but I have it fixed with a registry delete, so I'm wondering does anyone else suffer from this?
-
i think that i may have this problem, and i have a similar specification to yours.
Care to tell us what you deleted from the registry in order to solve this? -
I know what you mean! Vista sucks. This is probably not what you are looking for but disabling the UAC is probably the first step to speeding up Vista. When I find other hacks I will post them on here as well.
Click on the link below and follow instructions to disable those annoying prompts.
http://www.computerperformance.co.uk/vista/ConsentPromptBehavior.htm
The top 3 things that slow down vista are:
1. Windows Defender
2. UAC
3. Norton Antivirus
Don't have NA and don't know how to disable WD yet but UAC is gone and everything goes faster already. I also went to system and set everything to highest performance and changed the start menu to classic look. Finally I am starting to feel like I am running things at a speed a little bit less than XP Professional SP2 used to run at! -
When doing small task such as surfing the web, opening up the email application, it does freezes up on me. This may be fixed in SP1.

I get a long pause at startup. At this very second, I am deleting Vista and installing XP Pro.
Ding dong the witch is dead!
I'll give it another go after SP1 comes out. -
yea i get the long pause at startup but after that no pauses or hangups that i have really noticed.
-
Nope, no pauses here.

The way you know you have this is go to your event viewer and look in the error column, you should see iaStor or iaStorv with errors next to it. Clicking on it will show it timed out. It's a problem with vista and the intel controller it waits for the process to time out which takes about 30seconds. It has nothing to do with UAC, norton, or defender.
I did a lot of research and the common fix is to swap your sata cables on a desktop, but laptops don't have that ability.
Step1: I suggest you either backup your registry or make a restore point just incase.
Under search: regedit
Navigate to: HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\System\CurrentControlSet\Services\
Locate: folder "iaStor"
Under "iaStor" you will find a folder named "Parameter" > delete this folder
Locate: folder "iaStorv"
Under "iaStorv" you will find a folder named "Parameter" > delete this folder
Reboot -
Hi,
My experience was related with very short pauses (not long) which affected my writing.... short delays while typing in Word or even here at these forums. I just removed these two services from starting automatically when I boot the computer (I have no idea which one did the trick):
- pcmservice.exe (part of Dell media experience software)
- updreg.exe (a process from Creative Tech. that reminds us to register their products).
Perhaps this might help someone....
Regards. -
that is caused by either the scheduled defrag or windows defender

Ok that registry edit sounds like a cool hack but only if you have the intel controllers right? I am trying to speed my vista up to the fastest speed it can go to without becoming unstable. Anyone know of any other cool things they have done that helps speed it up. (Other than hardware upgrades).

If I have McAfee security, do I need Windows Defender to be turned on?
-
eh i personally find windows defender useless. it never finds anything that other programs such as spybot, spysweeper, spy doctor find. therefore on my personal laptop, i disabled it completely and have not looked back.
-
long pause at startup here also. right after sound, netcard load up, takes about 20-30 seconds for me to "be able" to do anything

I tried this and I think that it took care of my pauses. If it happens again I will post it on here. Thanks.
Anyone else get "pauses" in vista?
