I got my 1720 yesterday and so far I am not impressed. Anyone else disappointed in the performance of their new dell?

Unpacking the thing I noticed small imperfections in the paint on the top and a few light small scratches on the wrist rest area.

This thing blue screened right out of the box and restarted before I even got to the desktop the first time. Then copying files with 2 explorer windows open it locked up 4 or 5 times before I could get the copying done.

So far I am not impressed with this dell, it’s slow and unstable. I am not sure if I am going to keep it. I wonder if a clean install would make it run much better.

    Current Notebook:
    Inspiron 1720, Intel Core 2 Duo T7500, 2.2GHz, 800Mhz, 4M L2 Cache
Alpine White Color with Gloss Finish
    2GB, DDR2, 667MHz 2 Dimm for Inspiron 1720
High Resolution, glossy widescreen 17.0 inch display (1920 x 1200)
    256MB NVIDIA GeForce Go 8600
    160G 5400RPM SATA hard drive 5400 RPM
Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
    8X DVD+/-RW Dual Layer Drive
    Integrated Sound Blaster Audigy

That happened on my Vostro 1400.

Opened box. Plugged in. Turned on. Create Vista user. Crash.

I formatted and put XP on and it's very snappy and stable now :)

Do a clean Windows install. You’ll notice a huge performance boost.

It is more Vista than Dell. So many people complain on Vista. I am happy I picked XP! Hope SP1 will help. Vista is still in BETA version, really.

I couldn't disagree more... The problem is software and driver incompatibility...

    To the original poster....

Start by formatting as previously mentioned and install stuff yourself... As my i1520 runs PERFECT so I would imagine you should have the same results... It runs Vista faster than XP ever ran on Anything so I recommend you keep Vista.

Interesting. XP SP2 blows Vista out of the water on these machines / night & day - actually we should not even be discussing it.

I have Vista/XP on my desktop and XP is only marginally faster, if it all noticeable but on this laptop, XP really takes the cake. I've decided to stay with Vista because the majority of the time I'm doing work. If I was heavy into multitasking or gaming I wouldn't hesitate to get back to XP.

It is a lot of driver issues & incompatibility and maybe within the next year or so the Vista/Dell combo will improve enough that performance will be on par with XP.

I should load the crappy quality video I shot with my camera to show a bud the performance of my i1520 on Vista...

I will reshoot the video if demanded as it was just a quick thing I did to show my computer's performance to my Wife and a bud (both located in other cities than I am now)...

Notice at the end I loaded VMWare up with UBuntu 64Bit and the machine showed no performance hit... Also notice how many programs I have running normally and no performance hit... Notice how fast applications start up... My most used application, Visual Studio .NET, also is shown responding instantly... That never happened on XP...

XP NEVER ran this fast for me... On anything...

Though the major difference between my machine and some others is the insane amount of RAM I have...

    Thanks for the suggestions.

Since I am new to vista I will probably run it for a few weeks to get use to it and then do a clean install.

If they had drivers for xp on dells site I would go with it.
