I bought cheap Dell 1525 about two weeks ago and just for heck I went to Dell and enter my Service Tag..Shows Warranty is Expired...I called Dell and ask about it Dell said Best Buy will handle any issues and not Dell. So I started thinking what the heck and called Best Buy they say Dell will take care of any issues that may happen and not them. But Best Buy did offer to sell me some extended warranty. If you bought from best buy you may want to check it out..But so far no problems with the laptop

That must be a bug with Dell. They just recently (well a year ago now) came into retail stores so that is just one thing they apparently didn't account for. If you didn't purchase the GSBTP from Best Buy then you are covered by the manufacturer's one year warranty (only covers manufacturer's defects).

I am not exactly clear on how Dell handles retail sales. Apparently some people who have purchased Dell notebooks from Staples had to receive service from their own tech repair solution. So I would assume that Geek Squad may handle your Dell repairs. You may receive a better answer if you call Dell during the week.

In fact I think there was a thread about this not so long ago!

Here is the thread I was thinking of:
Buying Dell from Best Buy Beware Warranty Service

Not sure if it will help, but hey...its informative!

Sounds like your local Best Buy is a bit confused. Did you speak to a blue shirt or a Geek Squad Agent, if you don't mind my asking?
Dell basically hands the coverage over to us, before the unit is even sold. It begins at date of purchase, and if you didn't go with the Geek Squad Black Tie Protection (the extended warranty you referred to), then you'll have the same standard MFG warranty you'd have received with Dell, however, you simply bring the unit to your local Geek Squad Precinct (one within every Best Buy, and a few standalone stores), instead of contacting Dell support and shipping the unit out via box.
Usually it will (the date of purchase) be logged into a system called STAR, which logs the purchase date and any repair work done to the unit in the past, if work is ever done. If it's not properly logged, your nearest Best Buy can look up your receipt, unless you paid via cash. Then you'd need to have had Reward Zone (free membership for deals and cash back). If you paid by cash and didn't have RZ and didn't still have your receipt, you'd be in trouble.
It's pretty standard. Usually a bit faster, since it ships the next morning you drop it off (bar Sundays and non-regular truck days - varies by store, but usually there's a shuttle 4 to 5 times a week), depending on the load at the service center.
Hope this helps. =)

This is great information, JM...I didn't realize all this about how exactly the warranties w/Dell were handled by BB!
You do, learn something new every day!

Thats good to know, i was always wondering about that and the OP made me worry about buying from BB. Thanks for the info

Glad to have been of assistance.
If anyone has any other questions in regards to this, or anything other Best Buy-related, feel free to shoot me a PM, as I don't regularly post in the Dell section. -
I wouldn't have but I called about a Sony they had and ask if they had any in stock. They said yes and would hold one for me if I could get there by 11:00pm. So I drive 25 miles there and ask for the Sony that was held for me. First thing I heard was we don't have any..haven't in a week. Yeah I was P/O they offered the Dell for $429.00 so I bought it. I'm no fan of Best Buy I put them right up there with Walmart..
-
Was that the $499 Sony that was offered last week (or week before last)?
-
yes I think it was..

Interesting. They shouldn't have said they'd hold it for you. It's against company policy to put any ad item on hold.
My Best Buy sounds nothing like your local Best Buy, I'm very glad to say.

I haven't bought a Dell from BB but have purchased a Compaq. A little over a month the Compaq died.. I guess from the nVidia GPU, called HP and they didn't recommend sending the unit back to BB for repair even though they were an authorized repair station stating that they may take longer to fix it.. Sent the unit back to HP with free s/h to and fro.
Anyone bought from Best Buy?
